Local lists crafted by locals - San Luis Obispo!

This went way better than expected! Thank you to everyone who commented on our last post. Here’s the beginning of a very beautiful list of makers/ small businesses in SLO!

Feel free to tag anyone we missed! The list is up on our website (full transparency I’m not a designer so it’s functional but not that pretty *yet!*!)

Small business is HARD! This is our way of shining a light on some of the ones that bring the magic to SLO.

Next up: Santa Cruz!

Hi friends! It’s been a while 🌿 small businesses are the flowers of our communities.

this next chapter of idyll is going to be a mission to find them, share them, and celebrate the ones who bring magic to each community.

like I did in the shop, I’ll be looking for makers, artists, ceramicists, eateries, wine bars, etc. in each city that I have visited or plan to. my hope is that this little platform can help you find the local places and people in your communities.

how it will work: each day (or every other day lbh) I’ll post a city, and your job is to tag all the small businesses and artists in it. I’ll take those tags, turn them into a list, and post them on my website 🌿

This is a FREE service. I just want to see small businesses thrive, and this feels like an aligned way for me to do it.

Santa Barbara and Carpinteria are up already! Ventura, SLO and San Diego are coming up next. Then Western Australia!

If anyone feels excited about the project, feel free to reach out to help with templates and design! Looking forward to collaborating with you.

It’s been honey the whole time 🍯

Swipe through for the full story of how a Google search for ‘synonyms of honey moon’ led to a name, how that turned into the plant shop we kept alive for five years, and why I am carrying it forward into something new.

Apiary Beverage Co. is transforming the space into what I know will be a beautiful flower of gathering and community, and we couldn’t be more excited to see it grow.

As for us? I am taking my love of plants and our connection to them, out in the world where I can witness them in all of their ecological beauty.

Follow along as I translate the language of plants that I listen to, travel to say hello to the tree I wrote my thesis about, and share stories and snippets along the way. 🌿

Affirmation notes I wrote for me, that might help those of you going through big life changes 🌿

I closed my little plant shop in Santa Barbara two weeks ago, after five and a third years of business. We sold out in five days and ended on our terms.

I don’t know exactly what comes next, so I’m sitting with the experience and trusting this is part of how I get here.

And that’s a wrap 🌿 who knew idyll was just a room the whole time? 🥰😂 all jokes aside, these past two weeks have felt like moving through honey. 🍯 thank you for taking time out of your busy lives to eat oysters, and fill your homes with plants and art, and stop by to share what idyll has meant to you.

Retail is a tough business. It isn’t just what’s in the shop, it’s also signing on to be present for the full experience of living. Finding the right gift or plant is part of it, but for me, the more rewarding part was being there for the whole gamet of being human.

I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing many of you fall in love, I’ve cried with you during breakups and shared my poetry, I’ve hugged some of you the day of a cancer diagnosis and I’ve sent your friends off with gifts to comfort you for loss of many kinds. It has been a heart achingly beautiful experience and I am so grateful that you all trusted idyll and I to hold these moments.

I believe wholeheartedly in the in person experience. The mundane is where the magic is. And I am looking forward to giving my art and my writing the same chance I was able to for many other artists. Thank you all for letting me be me through this. It is overwhelming to feel the reflection of so much goodness and love from all of you and I can’t wait to watch this space transform into its next rendition.

In the mean time, I’ve updated my website with all of my favorite places to eat and visit in sb, as well as a running list of all of the artists whose work we carried in the shop so you can buy directly from them or even better, find a local retailer who carries their work 💚

FINAL CHAMPAGNE TOAST TOMORROW 3PM! Just me and the queen left in the shop. 🌿🍾 you can name your price on anything that is left, I’ll be taking whatever doesn’t sell to the thrift shop on Monday! ✨

Friends. Community. Thank you for this incredible send off. It fills me with joy to know that there are little plants from our shop in your homes, living and breathing alongside you.

I’m not entirely sure what’s next for me, but I will look back on this time in my life with so much love. Thank you for making it so special.

See you tomorrow at 3PM for our final toast 💚
