Designed in collaboration with , the project centers on a compact bar core within a lightweight pavilion, preserving the openness of the continuous roof, exposed wood soffits, and steel structure. Operable openings connect the interior and exterior, while the terrace extends the architectural language through layered seating, planting, and subtle material contrasts—creating a cohesive setting shaped by openness, informality, and its coastal context.

Together, they created a welcoming destination defined by warmth, intention, and a strong sense of place.

In 2013, AB design studio acquired a rundown, vacant building nestled within the industrial landscape of Santa Barbara's Haley Corridor. Originally a bakery, our team navigated an intensive city process to repurpose the structure. Over the past decade, we have witnessed the remarkable evolution of this neighborhood. From its industrial roots, the area has blossomed into a lively social hub, bustling with new coffee shops, eateries, and breweries. As integral members of this community, we take immense pride in contributing to and being woven into the vibrant tapestry of this resilient locale.

AB design studio developed a comprehensive strategy involving the adaptive reuse of a 1920s-built office to create Market Street Lofts, a multi-level 50-unit residential building of warehouse-style lofts in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district. The rooftop crowns Market Street Lofts with a unique blend of city energy and calm retreat. Designed to extend living beyond the walls, it offers residents open-air space with sweeping urban views—perfect for relaxation, gatherings, or taking in the iconic San Francisco skyline.

The existing exterior was meticulously renovated to mirror the modern features of the new addition, including the removal of a roof overhang to restore the building's clean, rectangular form. Deep steel awnings now provide shaded protection from the harsh afternoon sun, while a vigorous effort was made to re-landscape the area with drought-resistant plantings, enhancing both sustainability and aesthetic appeal.

Our architectural concept features two superimposed wings: one optimally oriented towards the Pacific Ocean to the south and the Santa Ynez Mountains to the north, while the lower wing discreetly houses private living spaces nestled within the mountain chain.
