“The forest, in this series, reveals a system of virtues embedded within its very structure. Towering aspen trees rise rooted with patience; light filters through, illuminating only what is ready to be revealed.

Each animal becomes a silent teacher, not as an object but as a mentor, unveiling the essence of what keeps all living miracles united in harmonious balance, a moral compass for humanity to take course.

Through this series, I offer a gentle call to live with greater humility, deeper connection, and a renewed sense of wonder for the living world that both surrounds us and sustains us.”

New in from Maggie Shapiro, local woodturner: Ebonized Maple Burl with Kingman Turquoise Inlay. Measuring 6 x 15 inches. This piece, one amongst thirteen pieces available at Thornwood Gallery in Santa Fe, is a perfect example of the art that nature makes meeting the artist who knows how to highlight it.

Maggie Shapiro is a Santa Fe-based woodturner whose work bridges the gap between natural preservation and sculptural artistry. Specializing in decorative and functional bowls, vessels, and intricate basket-illusion pieces, she sees time at the lathe as a collaborative dialogue with fallen wood. Rather than imposing a predetermined shape, Shapiro lets the wood's inherent voids, figure, and swirling grain dictate the final form. To accentuate these natural characteristics, she often incorporates complementary materials such as stone and metal or adds striking depth through tactile carving. Deeply influenced by the elegant curves of traditional pottery and the geometric motifs found in nature, Shapiro aims to craft visual delights that honor the unique, raw beauty of every piece of wood she touches.

Afternoon Getaway is a work by contemporary Spanish artist Fernando Aracil.

Medium: Mixed Media on Canvas

Dimensions: 31 × 31 inches

Artistic Style: Aracil's work sits at the intersection of expressive, large-scale abstract compositions and subtle landscape forms.

Visual Elements: The piece features a rhythmic composition of bold, vertical stripes or linear elements rendered in a rich, varied color palette. These vibrant vertical accents rest above dynamic, gestural brushstrokes and rich textures.

Themes & Inspiration: Like much of Aracil's portfolio—which frequently references sunlit walls, coastal serenity, and Mediterranean light—Afternoon Getaway translates the feel, brightness, and warmth of a midday escape into abstract forms and rhythmic color.

Frane Mlinar worked as a graphic designer in the 80s (commercial art, technical illustration) before joining the Croatian hyper-realism movement in 1988.

Mlinar states that one of his artistic goals is to connect viewers with the traditions of ancient fishing villages along the Adriatic Sea, where daily life has remained uniquely unchanged.

Mlinar paints boats resting on still water, centering reflections with the same focus and detail as the boats themselves. Looking at his work, the viewer is impressed by both the realistic depiction of the scene and the perspective created by shadows and reflected images.

The underside of a boat becomes a reminder of nature’s complexity….

Two paintings by Mlinar are available for sale at Thornwood Gallery - Santa Fe (555 Canyon Road):
