Not taller than me yet. But he will be. That’s the whole thing about raising a teenage son, you’re loving someone who’s leaving you a little more each day, on purpose, the way he’s supposed to. Keep your kindness, my son. Hold it tight.

I’ve always been a water baby.

My mom used to carry me down to the ocean in a folded beach chair before I could even walk, easier than trying to hold me and all the stuff. I grew up eating sand, literally. I’ve always identified as a mermaid.

Moving to Ibiza gives me access to the nature that makes my soul sing. Ocean, salt air, wide open horizons.

Any chance I get, I find my way back to the water.

…try not to miss it…

The last two months have been some of the hardest on me emotionally that I’ve experienced in the last few years. Harder than moving across the country. Harder than a quiet break up a few years back. Tougher than the judgment of reality TV.

What’s carried me through is my friends. The ones who show up without me asking. Who sit with me in the hard days and celebrate the good ones just as loudly. I don’t think I would have made it through these two months without them. They are my peace. My safe space. My healing power, right alongside joy itself.

I don’t wish divorce on any family. Ten years into this and it’s still extremely difficult. I’ll leave it at that.

Instagram can make life look like perfection, but nobody ever really knows what’s really going on underneath it all. Whatever you’re carrying right now that people don’t see, I wanted you to know you’re not alone. And if you’re lucky enough to have friends like mine, hold onto them tightly. They are everything.

I fight for this beautiful life, and there is SO much to be grateful for.

Someone told me recently, “Wow, you have a hard life.” And I said, “No, I have a beautiful life!” Then to my surprise they agreed. “Yes, you have a beautiful life. But that doesn’t mean it’s not hard.” 🫶💕

So. Much. Drama.

I don’t want to raise my sons on a story about what the world takes from them. I want to raise them on a story about what they build.

People ask why I moved to Europe. I argue that it’s for the guns and mass shootings, but the real answer is I wanted my boys to have room to just be kids a little longer before the world starts judging them differently. Because it does. Even now. That’s just true.

But here’s what I actually believe: excellence isn’t a burden we carry because we have to prove something. It’s a standard we hold because we come from people who built legacies out of very little. Why do you think Shaquille O’Neal has his doctorate? He’s one of so many people I look up to for what it looks like to take your privilege, your story, your history, your ancestry, and demand excellence out of yourself and your family and the lineage you are creating together.

I want my boys to know their history, their roots, their ancestry, and use all of it as fuel, not weight. Not “twice as good to get half as far.” Just great, period. Because that’s the standard we set for ourselves regardless of what anyone else expects.

I started working at a really young age because I loved it. Modeling gave me confidence and a base to build businesses. I’ve been working since I was two years old, and that is not an exaggeration. I’m incredibly hard on myself and I grew up in quite the privileged bubble.

That’s Black excellence to me. Not what the world takes from us. What we build, on our own terms.

In my house, it’s the opposite. Having a nanny never meant my kids got catered to. It meant more trusted, loving adults in their corner, helping me raise them right. Laundry. Dishes. Workouts. Meditation. That’s not staff doing chores for my kids. That’s a village teaching my kids how to love themselves and become capable, grounded humans.

I’ve had help since they were 2 1/2 and 6 months old, while I built a business, renovated a home, and ran a radio show as a single mom. Needing help was never a flex or a failure. It was survival, and it was love. It still is.

So villainize it if you want. I’ll keep raising kids who know how to work hard and be held well.

Stop blaming her for who she trusted. Blame him.

They were both single. They were not both in charge. He held the power, so he holds the blame.

When I actually sat with and heard it from her, the story I’d been told fell apart. The “dad she slept with” wasn’t a scandal she caused. It was a man with all the power and a woman left holding all the shame. Same old script. He walks away clean, she wears it.

Am I surprised? No. Am I disappointed in a world that still does this to women? Every single time.

It may not be important to all parents, but raising my kids to be kind is extremely important to me. Read on to find out why!

Laugh at me all you want, but it works! As a single mom, I used to dread the playground when my kids were tiny. One would run one way and the other would bolt the opposite way. I needed peace of mind to let my young boys have more freedom. So the bird call was born. And yes, our nannies have learned it too. Easily one of my top 10 parenting hacks. You’re welcome.
