Mission statement: for many years LAGS decided to be the underdog of local theaters. We have produced many shows and can’t even count how many actors, directors, choreographers, stage managers, set builders, musical directors, musicians, box office people we have had. COVID threw us a curve ball and we lost our space. What’s next for us? We want to reimage the company, how can we do that? For so many years we were the Saratoga company that would embrace new works from playwrights, so moving forward LAGS is back and our goal is to embrace new works as staged readings. New works in the Capital District are great but so many local playwrights have no voice in this area. LAGS would like to give those voices a platform to hear their works. It’s a time for us to take a step back and understand what new works means to the Capital District, coming soon, LAGS will be producing new plays by local writers.

Announcement: LAGS is hoping everyone is staying happy and healthy during this “new normal” we call life. We wanted to give you an update on LAGS future. The place we’ve called home for almost twenty years has gone through some management changes and after lengthy discussions about rentals we were unable to come to an agreement that would work for both LAGS and The Saratoga Arts Center. We are very happy for the future of the theater as it’s being redone with new floors, new lighting booth, lighting, and eventually new seating. We knew for many years that our pricing was well below normal rental fees and we knew at some point they were going to go up. Unfortunately, we are not able to afford these prices.

So, what does this mean for LAGS? It means a new beginning and a new model for us. Our fall production of The Crucible and our spring production of Bill W and Dr. Bob will sadly not be produced. We are looking for an affordable venue to produce a spring production of Our Town. Until then we will have three virtual productions. One in March, April and May…details coming soon.

Along with our possible spring production of Our Town we are looking to do small one night only pop-up productions throughout the Capital District if we are able.

In our almost 20 years of producing theater we’ve seen over 300 actors; production staff and musicians walk through our lobby doors. We were able to produce many premieres of new works as well as area premieres of published work. We pushed the envelope with producing plays that people said can’t be done in a small space such as our production of Angels in American: Part One or the musicals Chicago and Rent. We accepted those challenges and produced quality work.

When LAGS was formed we knew producing theater comes with many unknowns. Throughout the years we watched companies come and go. We always said, “if LAGS stops producing theater it has to be on our terms” and it was. We didn’t lose money on an ambitious product or didn’t succumb to closing due to COVID. We could have tried to make the rental work, but we knew in these uncertain times that eventually we would lose money and have to close our doors.

We have enjoyed being a fixture on Broadway in Saratoga Springs. We are gone we are just on a long pause.

We will soon be posting events for our digital readings. Stay well and Happy.

Love you all…LAGS
