The dining table that works for the holidays is rarely the one that works on a Tuesday.

A stronger plan sizes the table for the people you seat most often, then lets extension leaves handle the big gatherings. From there, clearance does the real work: about 36 inches where diners only sit and rise, and 42 to 48 inches where someone needs to walk behind them with a dish.

Before a cabinet box is built or a slab is cut, there is one more drawing worth your attention.

Shop drawings are the fabricator's plan for a custom piece: exact dimensions, seams, hardware, and how it meets the walls around it. They are reviewed against the design and approved before production starts, because a correction on paper costs far less than one in stone or wood.

A contractor can only price what has been decided.
