“What is one thing you love about candle making?”
I get asked this quite a bit.
My answer in 2022 always used to be that it’s the perks that come with it. Not having to buy air fresheners and that I can make my place smell like whatever scent I feel like that day. It’s therapeutic. It’s creative.
As most people know, I took 3 years off of making candles. 3 years off from my business. Those 3 years gave me so much time to reflect on that business owner from 2022. I realized how much I really didn’t know or how much of a novice I still sounded like even though I began my candle journey in late 2019. I’ve worked with a lot of different waxes and created some ✨AMAZING✨ different scented candles. But I was always chasing that high of loving the candle hoping everyone else would too. I can now see how juvenile it was of me to answer that question the way that I did.
Me in 2026 has completely reshaped that answer. While yes, I do love the perks of never having to buy air fresheners and that it is therapeutic and creative, I have taken on a whole different side to candle making. Taking a deeper dive in the art itself when it comes to supplies and I’m far more picky about them. I’m much more picky about the packaging and how my candles are presented within themselves. I wanted mine to look different - candles I don’t see in person very often. I’ve spent time researching supplies so I have a good indication of what would be safest and best for customers.
When someone now asks me what I love about candle making, my answer is always this…
“Educating.”
It’s not a selling point. I love being able to tell people about the different types of waxes (pros and cons), the best selling candles I’ve had (all of them on pure luck), the meaning behind my business name, the comparison between my candles and mass produced product. Even to other vendors who include candles in there products and want to know how to make them smell strong without it being overkill. Even down to pricing because all COGS is not the same as mine.
The educational part has been such a huge part of my candle journey and if someone ever has a question, I’ll always answer it happily. I know some other small business owner has my formula for candles so I see no reason the person next to me can’t know how I make mine.
Education is also good for those who want to start. All the tips, tricks, and warnings are always helpful for those that want to start.
Candle making is a wonderful hobby to get into and in the end saves so much money (when done right)! There’s a lot of trial and error along the way as it is a science but it all pays off in the end if you have the patience for it. I’d never want to take this part out of my life!
