On This Day in History - October 25th, 1532

1532 was a great year for Anne, and certainly she would have been thrilled to end the year in the French court, presented to all as Henry's acknowledged companion and future wife. On October 25th, Henry was welcomed to the French court by a 3,000 gun solute, and King Francis himself sent Anne Boleyn a rare diamond that was to be presented to her by an esteemed and high ranking court officer (Anne was fashionably late, arriving two days after Henry).

The artwork on the candle below features Anne seated in the coronation chair of England, signifying her declared and rightful place as Queen. Scented with a blend of Eucalyptus, bergamot and amber, this is a perfect Christmas gift for any Tudor lover!

On This Day in History - October 24th, 1537

Jane Seymour died just a 12 days after giving birth to Henry's much wanted heir, the future Edward VI. The artwork on the candle below features Jane in a forget-me-not blue hue that signifies Henry's undying love for her. While Henry would go on to marry three more times, he never truly loved again after Jane, and she was the only queen afforded the honor of being laid to rest next to him in St. Georges Chapel.

So go on, light the wick and breath in the ladylike, fresh scent of the forget me nots that so perfectly represent the aura of Jane.

On This Day in History - September 19th, 1580

The death of Katherine Brandon, friend and ally of Queen Katherine Parr. Katherine married 49 year old Charles Brandon when she was just 14 years old, and as the wife of one of Henry's closest and longest companion, grew up at the center of court drama. By the time that Katherine Parr became Queen, Katherine Brandon had become firm in her protestant faith, even joining an exclusive reformist circle, which included the Queen. Katherine Brandon was a strong influence on Katherine Parr, and most certainly would have encouraged the new Queen's religious writing. Queen Katherine would go on to publish 3 books, becoming England's first published author, and Katherine Brandon would remain her friend and confidant throughout the rest of her life.

Fun (alright, not so fun) Fact - Henry VIII once thought to "replace" Katherine Parr as Queen, and take Katherine Brandon as his 7th wife!

History of the Day - September 15th, 1514

On a perfect early Fall day, Anne Boleyn likely spent her afternoon dancing at court and enjoying her new promotion as Lady in Waiting to the Queen of France. She could not possibly have assumed that on this day, the promotion of a lowly butchers son back in England would one day cause her so many problems. Thomas Wolsey had certainly done well for himself and had risen quickly in favor, and on September 15th, 1514, he was officially appointed Archbishop of York. He would later receive further promotions, and would eventually be elevated to the status of Cardinal. Had Anne known that Wolsey would become a life long adversary, she certainly would have had cause for concern at the news of his rise in power! Anne and Wolsey would eventually grow to detest one another, each having the ear of the King, and each holding very different ideals. While Anne relished in Wolsey's fall from favor after he failed to secure for the King his much desired divorce, Anne would not be far behind him in her own fall from favor.

On This Day in History - August 26th, 1533

Anne Boleyn prepares for the arrival of the new heir to the English throne! Anne attended a special mass at Greenwich Palace, the same place that Henry VIII himself was born, before to retiring to her birthing chamber to await the arrival of, what was presumed at the time, the new Prince of Wales. Traditionally Queens would retire to the birthing chamber a month or so before the expected arrival, and depending on when the baby decided to grace the world with it's presence, the wait could feel very long and uncomfortable (not to mention boring!). The health superstations at the time dictated that birthing chambers be draped in black cloth and no light was to be let through, lest bad spirits and illnesses make their way in and contaminate the unsuspecting mother. For Anne, this meant dealing with the heat in an unventilated, dark and stuffy room.

Luckily for Anne, she only had to wait in her birthing chamber for 11 days before Elizabeth was born! But more about that on September 7th 😃

For now, take in the bold scents of cardamom, bergamot and jasmine with our Anne Boleyn inspired candle!

Fun Fact of the Day - Katherine of Aragon kept monkeys as pets!

The below artwork (commissioned by Six of a Kind and created by local Seattle artist, Melissa Butler) shows Katherine of Aragon with her pet Capuchin monkey. It is well known that Anne Boleyn detested monkeys, which could well be in part to Katherine's love of them. This monkey is native to Spanish territories, and certainly would have reminded Katherine of her home in Spain.

Enjoy the sweet fragrance of pomegranate, Katherine's chosen badge, of this candle inspired by Henry's longest reigning wife, Katherine of Aragon.

Fun Fact of the Day - Jane Seymour

Did you know that Jane was the only queen to be granted the privilege (if you want to call it that!) of being buried with Henry in St. Georges Chapel at Windsor Castle? Ironically, Jane was however the first of Henry's wife's to not receive the privilege of a coronation. After publicly crowing his first two wives, Henry thought it better to see to it that his new bride fulfilled her promises. Sadly, while Jane did fulfill her role of the doting, obedient wife perfectly, she did not live long enough to receive the reward for her triumph. Still, she remained in Henry's heart for the duration of his life, and he never truly loved again.

Fun Fact of the Day - Anne Boleyn was almost married to another!

It's not hard to believe that Anne caught the eye of many men at court, and one of those eyes happened to belong to the Earl of Northumberland, Henry Percy. Anne met Henry while she was serving Katherine of Aragon (now that's an employment relationship that could have been nothing short of awkward), and Henry Percy quickly, and secretly, proposed. Given the importance of Northumberland, Henry Percy's marriage contract was a matter of state, meaning he needed the King's permission. Whether King Henry refused to allow the engagement with Anne to move forward because he had his own eyes on her, or because Henry Percy was already contracted to another more adventageous match, we can only speculate, but neither Anne nor Henry Percy handled the news well. Still, the heartbroken duo followed orders went their separate ways.

Henry Percy would later be a judge in Anne Boleyn's trial for treason, witchcraft and adultery. While Henry followed the rest of his peers and declared Anne guilty, he was distraught after the trial. Anne's fate had been sealed, and Henry Percy couldn't have saved her no matter what his vote had been, and his guilty verdict secured him much success and fortune. Henry however never returned to his wife, Mary Talbot, and died childless, presumably never having stopped loving Anne Boleyn.

Six Wives Fun Fact - Katherine Parr was the first published female author in England!

While famous for being Henry's sixth and final wife, Katherine was notable in her own right, and her personal accomplishments are often overlooked. Katherine was well educated both in text book learning and social grace.

Katherine published her first book, Psalms or Prayers, anonymously, and a year later became the first woman in England to publish a book in her own name when she published Prayers or Meditations in 1545.

July 31st is a full moon, which means witchy things are in the air!! Did you know that Anne Boleyn was said to be a witch, and it was rumored that she had six fingers on one hand (the mark of the witch!!). It is largely debated, however my opinion is that this was fabricated by those that opposed her. In Tudor England, deformities were met with extreme adversity and unkindness. A woman with six fingers would have surely been sequestered away and hidden from the public, not paraded in front of the Austrian, French and English court. Still, as she was condemned as a witch, one has to wonder...🧐
