The hearth is a natural gathering place within the home. In plaster or stone, understated or substantial, it anchors the room around it and brings warmth, character, and a sense of permanence. As the days grow shorter, we find ourselves drawn back to the fire.

Built in 1904 and beautifully maintained over the years, Interlaken called for a light touch. Our interiors approach preserved the home’s original character while introducing new paint, casework, stone fireplace surrounds, and furnishings. A mix of contemporary forms, rich textures, playful color, and the clients’ art collection lent each room its own character, while allowing the history of the house to remain part of the story.

An early study for 25 Mile Creek captures the idea that would carry through to the finished house: two simple, vernacular forms framing a lower, more open living space between them.

Designed as a shared home for a brother and sister and their families, the arrangement creates a sense of enclosure while opening the center of the house to the landscape, with the lake and mountains in one direction and hills and forest in the other.

For Lincoln Park, the renovation was shaped by a desire to bring a relaxed California sensibility to a traditional Pacific Northwest home. Warm white walls, natural linen, terracotta and oak create an easy backdrop for colorful art, layered lighting and furnishings designed to live well with a young family.

Throughout, beauty and function work hand in hand. The kitchen was completely redesigned with white oak cabinetry and a new orientation that connects cooking, dining and everyday family life, while the primary suite takes a quieter approach with grasscloth walls, soft ivory and beige tones, and touches of dusty pink.

Bainbridge is a story of rebuilding with memory intact. After the family lost their home to a fire, the new house was designed on the same site, carrying forward the charm and idiosyncrasy of its 100-year-old predecessor while creating a home for the next century.

A collection of smaller, familiar forms gives the house the feeling of a cottage that has evolved over time, while its position on the sloping site and generous west-facing windows keep the landscape, water, and changing light of Bainbridge Island ever present.

For The Snug, an old farmhouse set apart from the property’s main house, the goal was to preserve its existing character while creating a comfortable and lighthearted retreat for guests.

Rather than extensively reworking the building, the renovation relies on thoughtful layers of pattern, color, and texture. Beadboard and wall paneling nod to historic European farmhouses, while vintage furnishings, unlacquered brass, patterned wallcoverings, and a playful mix of textiles give the interiors their warmth and personality. The result is a guest house that feels collected, welcoming, and very much at home in its original setting.

What began as a kitchen update grew into a full-scale transformation, reimagining the home around its remarkable Puget Sound setting and creating a stronger connection between the interiors and surrounding landscape.
