When I moved to Southern California after college I saw in person for the first time all the giants of contemporary art - Alex Katz, Jasper Johns, Barbara Kruger, Kara Walker, Mark Rothko, Donald Judd, Marina Abramovic, Ed Ruscha. So many! It was an incredible education. Perhaps my favorite, then and now, was David Hockney. May he rest in peace.

An en suite at our lake house project in Laurelhurst. The brief requested a space that was luxe and “grownup” but also welcoming. We chose a palette of creams and pale greens, a fluted oak vanity and fixtures in solid natural brass, which will develop a lovely patina over time. The arch into the tub is a little extra as well.
My favorite detail, though: the cafe curtains that double as shower curtains, made in a custom green-on-green stripe by a small British maker.

Palm Springs is, of course, famous for its version of mid-century architecture and design. And I do love it. But my favorite hotels here are those that riff on classic desert modernism. Still clean-lined and responsive to the setting, but with a quieter color palette and the inclusion of indigenous influences. This take seem here at the airy, stylish Drift hotel on Indian Canyon Drive.
