When you can’t come up with a color scheme, take your favorite image and upload it to an online color picker. Then choose three or four of the colors that stand out to you the most: a main color, and the rest are accent colors. Follow the 60-30-10 rule—The main color should make up 60% of the room (like walls) the next color 30% (furniture) and the final color(s) about 10% (so accessories, pillows, trim, etc).

Below, you can see some colors that came up from an image I took in South Africa on safari. This will make a great start to come up with a design plan for an African-inspired interior that is more subtle.

Have you heard of Lesotho? I have. It’s a landlocked, mountainous country in Southern Africa surrounded entirely by the Republic of South Africa. It’s famous for the colorful blankets worn by its people, which also make a great statement when used at home!

I’ll be sure to write a blog post about these blankets, which have an interesting history, soon!
