Fire Horse Forge

Fire Horse Forge Blacksmith and Damascus Knives, Classes and more with David Tuthill David has been working with metals, beginning with jewelry, since the age of fifteen.

He began forging as part of a sculpture course at Santa Barbara City College in 1988. He did not begin forging full-time until 1992 when he began to do privately commissioned work. Predominantly self-taught, he has constantly been challenging himself to further his skills by taking on tasks or designing jobs that force him to learn something new. He has been operating his business, FIRE HORSE FORG

E, in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle since 1994, where he produces architectural commissions, as well as furniture, sculpture, and jewelry. David’s years in the Northwest have been the most formative in his metalworking career. With his love for the outdoors, being surrounded by the vast and expansive nature of the region, as well as a rich industrial history, including timber, maritime trades, and railroads, he has continued to learn and has been able to more fully appreciate and understand how the influence of his surroundings can be reflected in the pieces that he produces. “For most of my life, I have been interested in history and how it still, directly and indirectly, influences us today." "There is a connection to many of the traditions that brought us to where we are standing, so how do we give these ancient sensibilities a modern voice, how do we relate it to now?”

Thought I’d share a glimpse of this railing with glass panels that I built about 8 years ago. I’ll get some detailed shots and post them soon. Forged and hot-dip galvanized steel, with slumped glass.

I recently sent out this 9-1/4” x 2-1/2” feather pattern chef. 1080 and 15N20 high carbon steel, with 201 nickel to help make the black core pop. Vulcanized paper and silicon bronze spacer, with dyed Beefwood handle.

Here are a few shots of an architectural commission that I recently finished. The client wanted organic motifs that showed forging, and this is my interpretation of that. All forged from silicon bronze, and with the exception of four relatively small tig welds, this is all assembled with joinery methods. Bronze is a real pleasure to forge when you’re familiar with it, and to me, it’s one of the most visually pleasing metals when worked in this manner.
As much as I enjoyed working on this project, it will be nice to get back to some smaller items. Thanks for looking!

Finally posting some shots of this beauty. 8-1/4” (209 mm) cutting edge, x 2-5/16” (58 mm) high at the heel, in “flaming tiki” patterned mosaic Damascus. The steel is comprised of a combination of different techniques and materials, including 1095, and 4800 KC powdered steel, W1, chainsaw chain, 1080, 15N20, and 201 nickel. I used canister made steel, as well as laminated bars, and feather Damascus for the edge and spine, which were bird-beak welded to create a beautiful flowing pattern at the tip. The handle is Beefwood, with a vulcanized paper and 201 nickel spacer. Thanks for looking.
