To my friends and customers back in SWFL:
One of my former students is selling her Shimpo pottery wheel. This is an older version of the same wheel I used. It’s known for lasting forever and being very reliable. She is located near my old studio in Bonita Springs. To make an offer or find out more, send Kristen an email at [email protected]

Sad day at Cottage #5. Completely empty and locking up for the final time. But it made a great ceramics studio and gallery for 4 years. Thank you to the city of Bonita Springs for the opportunity. And thank you to all in the community that have reached out recently with such kind words and wishes. Sometimes you don’t realize how much of an impact you’ve had until it’s time to leave! I will definitely miss Bonita Springs and the the little art community I helped build there.

I have some bittersweet news to share...

Well, the big announcement is that we are moving to Seattle at the end of July. This means my studio and gallery, which have been closed since early March due to the pandemic, is closing for good. Upriver Ceramics will be on indefinite hiatus. Here in Bonita Springs, I was attempting to make my ceramic artwork a full-time endeavor with only minimal side work with my other businesses, but with this move will come a change in that plan and a different career path. In the not too distant future, I hope to find studio space once again, in Seattle, to continue my artwork on the side, but for now I’ll be following a different path. Much of this is due to the pandemic and subsequent economic outlook, but the move itself has actually been in the works for a couple of years now.

At this time, I am no longer taking commissioned orders, but I do still have inventory listed on Etsy. If you’ve always wanted a piece, now’s the time to get one! Contact me to arrange a purchase in person or through Etsy. The Etsy shop will remain open as long as I have inventory, but shipping may be delayed.

Thank you to anyone who has ever supported my work by purchasing a piece, liking and sharing my posts, taking a lesson, supporting my Kickstarter campaign, attending my events, or given words of encouragement. Your support means the world to me. This isn’t the end of Upriver Ceramics and my artwork, but it is bye for now. Stay safe and I’ll see you on the other side.

This latest batch of dot mugs is the last one I’ll be making for a long time. Most were sold already but there’s a few owls and a couple sea turtles left. So if you’ve always wanted one, now is your last chance to let me know! 🦉🐢

Unloading the kiln. Most of these are already sold. But if you’ve always wanted an owl or sea turtle mug, don’t wait. This will be the last batch of them I’ll be doing for a long time! 🦉 🐢

Covid-19 strikes again!
Back story: a customer in Dubai purchased a piece from me back in September. A couple months later, it showed back up on my doorstep broken in several pieces. The customer didn’t provide the correct address information so it was returned to sender and didn’t survive the return trip. So I made him a new one...that didn’t turn out right in the kiln...So I made a THIRD one for him and shipped it back in March before everything started shutting down.

I hadn’t thought about it since and assumed the customer finally got his order and this was all done with. Then, a couple days ago, it appeared on my doorstep again🤦‍♂️ This time, it was returned, not because of bad address info, but because Covid-19 apparently shut down UAE’s postal service sometime between when I shipped it and when it got there. At least this time it survived the return trip to the opposite side of the world. But now the saga begins again...7.5 months and counting 😓

There hasn’t been much to show you ceramics-wise lately. So here is a throwback to some still life drawings I did in 2002 as a junior in high school. Back when I spent more time drawing than working with clay. I’m moving this week so I just happened across them. Now, I rarely draw other than to sketch ceramic designs and ideas. This does make me miss it, though!

A little update for you regarding my work and the Covid-19 pandemic...

All art festivals have been cancelled. All events in the park around my studio have been cancelled. I’ve closed my studio to visitors. And galleries showing my work have been closed. All of this is for an unknown amount of time, but predictions seem to get longer every day. So, in an effort to try and maintain some sort of living, I have retrieved all of my work from local shuttered galleries to sell online in my Etsy shop. I took great care in disinfecting every piece and will do so again before shipping any out to you just to be safe. My larger pieces are not on Etsy, but you can see them on my website and contact me for purchase and delivery within a reasonable distance.

Artists don’t receive paid-leave or unemployment benefits. So, if you can, please consider shopping online to support the arts during these difficult times. Of course, this pandemic is affecting everyone, so stay safe and only do what you can.

In the meantime, I’ve also decided to bring my pottery wheel and tools etc home to work from home. Traveling with unfired ceramic artwork is risky. But I’m doing my best to stay home and keep our loved ones safe. Thank you to everyone doing the same and to those on the “front lines” of this.

Here is a quick clip of a small commissioned lantern I made for a past customer. They accidentally broke their old one that I made previously. The finished piece is mostly unglazed porcelain and I wish I had a picture of it with a candle inside for you.
