Contemporary pottery in organic shapes designed and produced by Kristin Nelson in Seattle. VIT ceramics have thin white line detail, a Scandinavian sensibility, practical yet soft and are mid-century modern compatible. Original Kri Kri with whimsical black line decoration, made its debut at Barneys New York. Nelson studied weaving in Sweden and went on to get a degree in ceramics from the University of Washington. She now designs and produces both VIT ceramics and Kri Kri pottery in Seattle WA

Just finished an incredibly inspiring experience Pilchuck Glass School
Lost & Found was the theme for Session 7, 2026.
My goal in partaking in this course was to do something proactive to return to being a fine artist after working many years producing my limited edition ceramic dishes & lamps. It was delightful to be out of my studio and away from orders, exploring a new material, meeting new people and learning new things.
I guess Lost & Found was just the perfect theme for me.
It wasn't just the amazing gathering of creative people, kind & eager to assist, it was also the spirit of the place and the land that helped me to find what I was looking for.
After traveling & kayaking abroad a for many years with nigel kayaks world it felt like I was coming home, home to a place, the PNW where I grew up, & home to a person that has been hibernating inside me for awhile.

Experiences are an ingredient in art. It's always good to have a bunch of them on hand.

I got a degree in ceramic sculpture and spent most of my professional life creating two ranges of ceramics, kRI kRI and VIT ceramics.
Although I’ve enjoyed creating these collections, I have always wanted to return to making Art.

Finally, these past couple of years, I just started modifying what I had close at hand, slip cast pieces for my products.
Boxes were first. I made cutouts in them. Lamp finials followed, then vases and lamp bases.
I’m pleased with the result and happy to continue working to create pieces that let light in and incorporated shadow as an element.

As I’ve worked, struggling with my cutouts to get the desired effect, it occurred to me that maybe glass would be another way for expressing my ideas.
Next week, I’ll find out. Last fall I applied for a workshop pilchuck and was accepted… with a scholarship.
I’m thrilled to be heading off to “summer camp”, ready to learn and excited to try new things!

Little steps in new directions!
Although I've been making my living producing functional ceramics for many years now, I've always wanted to get back to creating "art". Finally, it's happening.
My strategy has been to just start, to fuss with what I have close at hand which is slip-cast pieces for lamps, vases & finials.
I began by making cutouts in them, altering the forms to let in light. Experimenting with glazes is another new trip. Most of the work is non-figurative, however I couldn't resist putting a kRI kRI figure stopper in the blue vase shape.
I have plans to go beyond re-purposing my production molds & to make more sculptures, but for now, these ventures from the path of usefulness have been joyful explorations.

Several years ago we set off in Nigel's little solo canoe. It wasn't a long paddle, less than 10 minutes out to Foster Island in Seattle, but it was the beginning of a great adventure!
