There are some journeys we may make several times, and others we can only make once. Seattle Glassblowing Studio and Hot Glass Color are saddened to hear that Paul Marioni has made his final journey; our hearts and deepest condolences are with his family.
A founding member of the American studio glass movement, Paul Marioni was deeply influential in the artistic development of glass makers around the world. From his early work in stained glass to his applications of enamel paintings on blown glass or photography on cast glass, Paul's innovative techniques and designs opened the limitless capacities of glass for generations to come. He was known for pushing the boundaries of glass and his impact is felt across the spectrum of glass media. As a mentor and instructor Paul was instrumental in defining the teaching structures at institutions like Pilchuck Glass School and Penland School of Craft where his legacies are felt to this day.
As owner Cliff Goodman, who first met Paul at the 1981 Glass Art Society conference in Seattle, says, "He was a towering figure in glass, he really shaped what imagery meant for a lot of artists. But I remember him most as a deeply caring person who cared about the whole world. He was always open to sharing his ideas and techniques and he would always listen. And he was passionate about how much he cared, he really *felt* it man, he cared about the issues of the day. The world needs more people like him."
Though we are heartbroken for so great a loss, the memories and the spirit of his legacy are eternal.
