Saturday March 14th - Ballard Art Walk

Usually you'll find me at my studio at BallardWorks, but next Art Walk I'll be chewing everyone's ear at the Kiss Cafe. Not literally, so don't be disappointed if you come and see everyone's ears intact. My plan is to sit politely and try looking professional and intellectually engaging.
So, come over and ask me questions, if you dare!

So, this one is different. Or it is what happens when one goes off the painting railings (on a crazy train? Chup, chup)

For a couple of years now, I have noticed that my paintings went from loose markings, with texture and visible clumps of paint, to polished small fields of color, separated by lines.
The shapes, well defined and solid. Same dynamic composition. Still very colorful. But tamed into a gridded patchwork.

All the wild gestures that in earlier work were final strokes, got dressed up into tidy corseted shapes.

The last painting I posted is an example of that.

I do like it. But, at the end last year (2025) I decided to "relax" from the tension that comes from uncertainty and fear, and gave myself permission to be messier, so the paintings take a slightly different flare. It was going back to basics, with big brush strokes, transparent layers, dots and lines as more active players and with visions of Baroque heavens opening up "a la Apocalipse a la carte". (Must be something in the air! Who knows!) I started about 3 paintings in this direction, but I have only finished this one. This painting also went through some calm editing and I think it is better for it.
My issue now is how to reconcile both painting styles: Up-tight carnival and end of times with polka dots.
I have spoken with other artists about this and it comforts me I am not the only one that gets a bit lost here and then.

This is a revised painting from last year that I thought needed some energy. I am not shy when it comes to some self critique and while I am comfortable with everything I send out from my studio, I know that future Angela does things differently than Angela from the past. A different frame of mind can turn a painting around. In this case literally. Upsidedown from the original, I present to you "Under the surface". 36x36

This painting is hanging at my studio and I am really enjoying how it has come together like a colorful cubist puzzle.

I might have to paint him some brothers and sisters.

In the meantime come see me at The Loft during Capitol Hill Art Walk on Thursday February 12th.

Painting the world as I see it.
This is Vashon Island Landscape #1
50x76 inches of the view from my studio window during my time

Everything inspires me. Colors move me to paint, but the lines and the shapes around me already land as an abstraction in my head. My painting process is an exercise to understand the world moving and changing around me. Changing so fast that what I snap, I have to piece together on the canvas. I absorb the concept, the essence and detail that reveals the idea. That is what I put on the canvas. I paint what I see.

This painting is currently on display at celebrating IGNITED BY VASHON until the 28th of September.

Thank you everyone that popped over to my studio last night for Art Walk. It was a pleasure chatting with you all. I have just moved into this larger studio in the same building (BallardWorks), and I am still figuring out what to put where, but overall more room to experiment! Yey! Exciting!

Thank you everyone who came over to my studio for Art Walk, last night!
I've just moved to a larger space in the building (BallardWorks) and I am still deciding on the natural flow of the space. For now, just posting some pics of what I am working on right now.

The photo doesn't really do justice but it is worth sharing. The reflection of the light coming through the clouds on a silver sky that turns so rich and spectacular at dawn. These pics I took yesterday. Wow. Just wow. I had to stand in the cold for a while to make sure I retained such beauty in my head.
