Jane Domestic

Jane Domestic Tools for every cook's kitchen. It marked the beginning of my love for cooking. Today, I find I don't need a lot of gadgets but only a few essential tools.

I'll never forget my first job in the kitchen, when my mom taught me to make the simple, iconic crisscross mark with a fork on peanut butter cookies. For the Suede Mitt, I made one tool from two: it's both a hot pad and an oven mitt, with the bulkiness of a quilted oven mitt stripped away. It still protects the most tender parts of the arm but offers a steadier, more pliable grip. I hope the Suede Mitt becomes a tool you'll reach for every day!

If you don’t subscribe to Ina Garten’s newsletter already you might want to. This description for how to set a table was in the her latest. It’s brilliant! Thanks 📸

Ask Ina:
“I’m not great at assembling table settings. What’s your advice?”
I tend to keep mine pretty simple. I usually base the color of the setting on the color of the flowers. Not lots of different flowers, but simply one big bowl of something dramatic: orange tulips, hot pink peonies, or white roses with lime green alchemilla.
To make the flowers look their best, I’ll use a paler color tablecloth—usually white, cream, or natural Belgian linen. The plates are almost always white (it makes the food look best), and the napkins either pick up the color of the flowers or contrast with them. For the Fourth of July, if I have blue hydrangeas, a white tablecloth, and red and white striped napkins looks great. If the roses are peach and the cloth is cream, a big peach napkin is nice.
Next is the flatware and glasses. Mix it up. I have a set of silver that’s half antique and half new, and I think it looks more modern than your grandmother’s silver. For glasses, I like to have an assortment of heights—low water tumblers, footed wine glasses, champagne flutes (if it’s appropriate). Light from votive candles will make the silver and glasses sparkle.
Don’t obsess; all the dishes and chairs don’t have to match—if they’re the same color and about the same shape, they’ll look just fine together. Remember, it’s about the friends, not the table setting.

I made these for family dinner yesterday! Yum. Here’s the recipe:

Vermicelli Sesame Noodles
1/4 c. Sesame oil
1/4 c. Black soy sauce
2 T. Sugar
1 T. Sriracha
2 T. Balsamic vinegar
11/2 lbs. Vermicelli, dry
1/2 c. Sesame seeds, toasted
1 c. Green onions, thinly sliced

In a large bowl, whisk together sesame oil, soy sauce, sugar, sriracha, and vinegar. Cook pasta one minute less than directions call for. Drain, rinse with cold water, and drain again. With you hands, immediately toss the pasta with the dressing, making sure pasta is completely and evenly coated. Chill at least four hours; mix once.

Add seeds and continue folding dressing through out the pasta. Remove to a shallow platter, top with green onions, and serve at room temperature.

My favorite get well gift is a classic red tin I buy at my local hardware store filled with a mini sized dessert of their choice. In this case, chocolate brownies were requested!
