Feel the Velvet, Baby

Feel the Velvet, Baby I do custom velvets. Please contact me for more info or check out my Etsy shop for finished work. I'm an ex-pat Seattleite living in Ottawa. Thanks!

A few years back I became obsessed with the kitschy velvet paintings of the '60s and '70s, and have since been trying my hand at this challenging art form. My tumblr page (http://feelthevelvetbaby.tumblr.com/) chronicles my evolving technique, and my website (https://www.feelthevelvetbaby.com/) is where I sell the paintings, etc. Let me know if you're interested in getting into velvet painting, are interested in having one commissioned, or know of a place to show my work.

I’m very sad to report that our dear canine buddy Oliver has moved on to the great dog park in the sky. For most of his life he lived with my parents and was a great comfort to my dad in his final days and to my mom in the weeks and months that followed. Cara and I had the pleasure of staying with Oliver on many occasions and took him on several road trips around the PNW and couldn’t have asked for a better travel companion. He loved chomping on carrots and could set land speed records when zooming. He was also an inveterate cheeseburger thief and belly scratch aficionado. He will be dearly missed by the many that knew and loved him.

Some of my fellow WWU alums might remember a talented chap named Darby McDevitt. He doesn’t really do FB or IG so I thought I’d toot the horn on his behalf that he’s just published his first “real” novel, The Halter. Here are some pics from the launch party last night in Montreal, which I was fortunate enough to attend. If you like lurid gumshoe noir a la Chandler or Hammett and you like thoughtful commentary on the future of identity and addiction in the age of AI and VR and if you also enjoy lots of references to PNW geography and ephemera then holy moly are you gonna love this book. Or if you’re not into any of that but want to support a fellow Viking on his burgeoning literary career you should buy or ask your favourite independent bookseller to order The Halter The Halter | Book by Darby McDevitt | Official Publisher Page | Simon & Schuster Canada

Like many of you right now, I was wondering if there was any way that I could help fight fascism in the twin cities, and then I remembered that I’ve got an Etsy shop with some velvet paintings of Minneapolis’ own Funky Pharoah, and several more that I’ve never listed.

So I’ve made them all available and as of today, 100% of the $ from their sale will be divided between the Minnesota Freedom Fund (which pays criminal bail and immigration bonds for individuals arrested while protesting police brutality and fighting for justice) and the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee (which organizes protests and educates community members on their rights).

(Fun fact: the paint I used for these was actually blended with the Sacred Waters of Lake Minnetonka!)

Nobody predicted the revolution would start in Minneapolis… except for the Purple Prophet, so please go to feelthevelvetbaby on Etsy (link in bio) and get yourself a one-of-a-kind tribute to a musical genius, help me clean out my basement, and support the good folks on the front lines in Minneapolis. Everything must go! Starting with ICE and CBP agents from American cities.

Woody Allen turns 90 today. Along with his peers Mort Sahl, Joan Rivers, Richard Pryor and George Carlin, Allen pioneered the post-Catskill naturalistic style of stand up comedy common today at clubs like the Bitter End and Cafe Au Go Go in the Greenwich Village scene of the 1960’s. With his own nebbish neurotic intellectual persona, Allen became a fixture on late night chat shows and a cultural icon before becoming one of the great auteurs of American cinema.

Harry Einstein, better known as Parkyakarkus, the father of Albert Brooks and Bob Einstein (aka Super Dave Osborne), was a big star on the radio in the ‘30s and ‘40s but he is probably best known today for having one of the most remarkable deaths in the history of show business. At the Friars Club roast of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Parkyakarkus got big laughs from the celebrity filled crowd doing his usual schtick slinging Greek accented malaprops. He took his seat to great applause and promptly slumped over into the lap of Milton Berle who asked if there was a doctor in the house. Thinking this was part of the act, the audience continued to laugh and applaud until the seriousness of the situation became apparent. Being a charity fundraiser for local hospitals, there were in fact several doctors in the house, and five physicians worked together to save Einstein. One used a pen knife to cut open his chest for open heart massage while another repurposed a lamp cord as a makeshift defibrillator. Singer Tony Martin, at the behest of emcee Art Linkletter, tried to pacify the crowd by performing the unfortunately selected ditty “There’s no Tomorrow,” but it was all for naught. The festivities, like Parkyakarkus himself, were beyond saving. Arnaz closed the night by saying “This is one of those moments that Lucy and I have waited a lifetime for, but it’s meaningless now. They say the show must go on, but why must it? Let’s close the show now by praying for this wonderful man… who has made a world laugh.” Einstein was pronounced dead at the hospital at 1:20am Nov. 24, 1958

“You were seventeen yesterday. You’ll be fifty tomorrow. Life is tough, are you kiddin’? What do you think life is? Moonlight and canoes? That’s not life. That’s in the movies. Life is fear and tension and worry and disappointments.” -happy birthday to the one and only Rodney Dangerfield
