Albert Guy “Sonny” Easom Jr. was born in 1938, to Etoile Majure Easom and Albert Guy Easom
Sr. in Sebastopol, Mississippi. His boyhood in Sebastopol was filled with family, outdoor adventures, and, of course, work — a value that shaped his life from the beginning. He graduated from Mississippi State University in accounting and made life-long friends while there. In 1960, he married Sarah Elizabeth See “Sally” Easom, and together they began a busy and meaningful life, building a family, growing businesses, serving their church and community, and rearing four children.
Sonny was a true entrepreneur, not only in business but also in his volunteer and civic life. He was instrumental in establishing the Sebastopol Water Association and later brought natural gas to Sebastopol as well. Throughout the years, he served on many boards, including the Scott County Board of Education for 25 years, and was a member of the Mid-Mississippi Development District and served as president for several terms as well as in other capacities.
He was influential in initiating the first Boy Scouts of America troop in Sebastopol. Over the years, he led many hiking trips including trips to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. In recognition of his service, he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, one of the highest honors given by the Boy Scouts of America.
In recent years, as a member of the Dancing Rabbit Genealogical and Historical Society, Sonny devoted time and energy to restoration of the Eads-Mansell-Sudduth House, the oldest house in Carthage, MS. Serving as vice president, Sonny was responsible for much of the hands-on renovation work on the 1858 house.
Sonny started Maxim Manufacturing Corporation in 1963 and was an early investor in the poultry industry in Sebastopol. He later purchased Easom Hardware Company from his parents when they retired. The store, founded the year after he was born, continues today under the ownership of his son, with four generations of family members having worked their first jobs at the “hardware store.”
Sonny was a longtime member of Sebastopol Baptist Church, where he served in several roles including the building committee. Under his direction, a new church building was constructed. For many years, when visiting in Fort Morgan, Alabama, he attended church at Saint Andrews by the Sea and the men’s breakfast group at Shell Banks Baptist Church.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sarah Elizabeth See “Sally” Easom; and his children, Susan Easom Garrard and her husband, John, Anne Douglas Easom Fisackerly, Albert Guy Easom III and his wife, Michelle, and Laura Easom Morgan and her husband, Nick. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were sources of great love and joy. His surviving grandchildren are Allyson Easom Duggan and her husband, Michael; Andie Easom Pillsbury and her husband, Zach; Albert Guy Easom IV “Cal” and his wife, Caroline; John Walter Garrard III “Jack”; MaCall Morgan Chastain and her husband, Charlie; William Walden Garrard and his wife, McKenzie; Elizabeth Eads Fisackerly; John Quitman Morgan; and Ellen Elizabeth Morgan. He loved his great grandchildren – Milly, A.G., Magnolia, Cooper, Hattie, Hardin, Charlotte, Walden, Vera, and Callan. He is survived by two sisters, Barbara Easom Barnett and Gloria Easom Richardson; his sister-in-law, Nita Ann Hobbs; he also leaves many nieces and nephews who spent many happy summers in Sebastopol, as well as his much-loved Easom and Majure cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Etoile Majure Easom and Albert Guy Easom Sr.; his grandson, Claude Kelso Fisackerly III; and his sister, Mary Frances Easom McQueen.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mississippi Children’s Museum afterschool program Launch into Learning and to the Sebastopol Baptist Church.
