Issued in San Francisco before the establishment of a federal branch mint, these $20 pieces served as legal tender during the height of the Gold Rush. This remarkable 1853 Assay Office Twenty Dollar glows with full mint luster and rich greenish-gold color, while its exceptionally sharp strike preserves even the finest details of the eagle and shield. Of the millions struck, few survive with the extraordinary preservation of this MS65 example.
