Playland is a 280-acre amusement park located in Rye, New York, and owned by the Westchester County government. Constructed in 1928 and designed by Frank Darling, NYC architectural firm Walker and Gillette, and landscape architect Gilmore D. Clarke, Playland was the first planned amusement park in the country.

Grand Light worked with Playland to restore and replicate a number of historic exterior light fixtures. The project involved the fabrication of more than 100 fixture mounts and custom acorn-style diffusers.

The glass diffusers were reengineered with 3D modeling to match the originals while improving stability and simplifying installation and maintenance. Using the updated specifications, we created molds and cast historically accurate prismatic soda lime glass diffusers with enhanced functionality. The fixture mounts were also replicated through casting to precisely capture the historic design for consistent reproduction.

Now back at Playland, these fixtures once again light the way for a new generation of visitors to this historic American landmark.

Plattsburgh City Hall in New York is a Classical Revival style building designed by architect John Russell Pope and completed in 1917.

As part of a renovation, Grand Light restored multiple historic pedestal mount light posts on the building's main stairs. After years of exposure to the elements, the fixtures required extensive refinishing and mechanical repairs to address rust, cracking, and deterioration.

Each 7-foot lamp post was fully disassembled so the deteriorated finish could be removed using our industrial burn-off oven and glass bead surface blasting. Once stripped, cracked sections were repaired through welding, while damaged or missing components were replaced with custom-fabricated replicas. The exterior components were then refinished in a satin black semi-gloss coating.

The original acrylic globes were replaced with new matching diffusers, and each fixture was rewired with new electrical components and photocells.

Now restored and reinstalled at Plattsburgh City Hall, these historic fixtures can once again be appreciated by passersby for decades to come.

Grand Light recently manufactured a batch of large custom pendant fixtures for an esteemed university.

Our engineering and design team began by preparing a comprehensive proposal featuring mock-up concepts created with cutting-edge CAD technology, including 2D line drawings and 3D models. Once finalized and approved, we proceeded with fabrication.

Each pendant was wired with a custom LED module engineered to integrate seamlessly within the fixture housing while meeting the lighting requirements of the intended space. Grand Light's LED Advantage offers a variety of tailor-made solutions that improve illumination quality while minimizing total energy consumption and maintenance costs.

Following crating, packing, and shipping, these fixtures were successfully installed and are already elevating the space as originally envisioned.

160 Federal Street is a historic 24 story office building located in the heart of Boston's financial district. Designed by George W. Fuller and Parker, Thomas & Rice, the Art Deco landmark was originally constructed in 1929-1930 as the United Shoe Machinery Building and remained the tallest building in Boston for nearly two decades.

Grand Light restored multiple historic Edward F. Caldwell pendant light fixtures within the lobby interior. After dismantling and transporting the fixtures to our factory, our team used historical records from our archives to guide the restoration process.

Each fixture received a brand new electrical configuration, replacing their existing light strips with LED screw-in dual sockets and a new up-light to upgrade the illumination without sacrificing their historic appearance. Through video conferences with the 160 Federal, we discussed potential electrical designs, providing them with mock-ups before settling on our final screw-in retrofit solution that we agreed would suit the fixtures best. Additionally, the existing fire gilded gold painted finish was cleaned, waxed and preserved, while replacement etched glass panels were fabricated to reflect the original historic design.

Upon completion, the restored fixtures were returned to Boston and reinstalled, where they continue to illuminate the lobby with the same elegance and grandeur as they did nearly a century ago.

Clocking in at 16 feet tall with 166 sockets, this six-armed historic chandelier nears the final stages of its restoration.

Grand Light artisans made some room to stage it in our factory, putting each arm onto the center shaft, fully dressing it with the ultrasonically cleaned original crystal, and performed comprehensive electrical testing to ensure that reinstallation on-site will go smoothly.

The Harvard Club of New York City is a private social club and designated New York City Landmark whose membership is limited to alumni, faculty, and board members of Harvard University. The club's Biddle Room was named in 1925 in honor of Nicholas Biddle, chairman of the House and Building Committees.

Grand Light partnered with the Harvard Club to restore several different E.F. Caldwell chandeliers and wall sconces in the Biddle Room. Once carefully removed and transported to our factory, each fixture was cleaned, waxed, with the sconces each fitted with new ivory candle covers and eggshell shades. Mechanical repairs were completed on damaged chandelier components, while select signs of deterioration were intentionally retained to preserve the fixtures' historic aesthetic. The wall sconces were also upgraded with new steel switch boxes for secure mounting.

Upon completion, our team returned the fixtures to the Biddle Room and reinstalled them with professional white-glove service.

Reconstructing historic lighting from century-old photographs.

For a recent large-scale historic theatre restoration, Grand Light had the task of recreating lost lighting fixture designs, our tools being photograph references, original design motifs from existing similar fixtures, archival research, and computer aided 3D modeling assisted by advanced 3D LiDAR scanning.

Using these photographs and 3D laser scanning existing fixtures for more historically accurate drafting, we captured the intricate details of surviving fixtures and converted them into a series of 2D drawings and fully realized 3D models. Each model reflects how Grand Light bridges historic craftsmanship with modern technology to help bring history back to life.

Central Park is the most visited urban park in the United States and is home to many famous attractions, including the Delacorte Theater. Originally constructed in 1912, the Delacorte Public Restrooms underwent a renovation in 2025 to restore its historic character and integrity.

Grand Light partnered with the Central Park Conservancy to recreate missing historic lanterns for the theater restrooms. Using archival photographs and documentation as references, our design team expertly replicated the original design through detailed 2D drafting and 3D modeling.

Once the blueprints were approved, we began the fabrication process. Using a combination of custom and stock components, we produced highly accurate replica lanterns.

Now installed, these faithfully designed fixtures seamlessly complement the renovated restrooms, blending historic design with modern functionality.
