LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are very efficient compared to traditional bulbs, but heat is still their #1 enemy. Even though most of the energy in an LED becomes light (not heat like incandescent bulbs), the small amount of waste heat that is produced is generated directly inside the tiny LED chip/junction. If that heat isn’t removed quickly, several bad things happen:

Reduced light output (lumen depreciation) For every ~10 °C (18 °F) increase in junction temperature, light output can drop 3–10 % depending on the LED type.

Color shift Phosphor-converted white LEDs shift toward blue or yellow as they get hot, changing the apparent color temperature (CCT).

Accelerated lifespan degradation The rule of thumb is that lifetime halves for every 10 °C above the manufacturer’s rated temperature. An LED rated for 50,000 hours at 85 °C might last only 10–15,000 hours at 120 °C.

Catastrophic failure Above ~150 °C epoxy lens can yellow/brown, solder joints reflow, or the chip itself can be permanently damaged.
