Every Wakefield-Scearce Presidential Mint Julep Cup carries a story in its silver. Inspired by the centuries-old British hallmark system, Mark J. Scearce created a distinctly American interpretation, an eagle cartouche paired with the initials of the sitting President, forever marking the era in which each cup was made.

With every new administration, a julep cup bearing the President’s initials is presented to the White House, a tradition that has been met with personal letters of thanks from nearly every President. Those treasured letters remain on display here at Wakefield-Scearce Galleries.

Presidents, dignitaries and generations of families have received these iconic cups, each one becoming a small piece of American history and an heirloom meant to be passed down.

Is Throwback Thursday still a thing? Because when you have this much history, we believe it ought to be.

A little glimpse of Wakefield-Scearce Galleries from years gone by, tucked inside historic Science Hill in the heart of Shelbyville. The rooms may have evolved and the collections have changed, but the invitation remains the same: come in, wander awhile, and discover something beautiful.
