Sometimes you have to look back to realize just how long you’ve been doing what you love. 🤎

A little trip into the D’Mode archives, circa 2017.

I designed and modeled this model home for a new subdivision out in Oswego, long before D’Mode looked like the business it is today.

And looking back at these spaces now, what strikes me isn’t what I would do differently almost a decade later. Because of course my eye has evolved. My style has evolved. I’ve evolved.

What strikes me is what hasn’t changed.

I still love imagining how a space can feel.
I still obsess over the details.
I still believe an interior should create an experience, not simply look finished.

There’s something pretty special about finding evidence of who you were becoming before you even knew where it was all going.

And apparently, I’ve always really loved this work. ✨

Sometimes the moment finds you. ✨

I was sitting outside, catching up on a replay from my coaching program, when something in the conversation lit me up and made me think about the work I get to do every day.

The environments we choose to occupy shape us.

They can shift our mood. Invite us to linger. Help us feel inspired, grounded, creative, connected… more like ourselves.

And when we slow down long enough to actually experience where we are, there’s a little magic waiting there.

That’s what I love about design.

I’m not interested in creating spaces that are simply beautiful to look at. I want to create environments that support the way you want to feel, live, create and connect.

Because your space isn’t just the backdrop to your life.

It’s part of the experience. ✨

Apparently I can’t just use a public restroom anymore. I have to analyze it. 😂

Welcome to D’Mode Design Interiors - Designer’s Journal No. 01, where I’m sharing the design details I notice out in the wild 🐆: what works, what doesn’t, and what I might push a little further.

First up: this bathroom inside a very cute Naperville coffee shop. ☕️

There was actually a lot done right here. I loved the tile selection, and whoever designed the vanity paid attention to one of those tiny details that can make or break the experience: the relationship between the faucet placement, sink and spout reach.

Yes, designers notice these things. 😂

But I also saw an opportunity to have a little more fun.

When the rest of a business has a distinct personality, I want even the bathroom to feel like it belongs to that same story. A few playful decisions could have carried the energy and identity of the coffee shop all the way through the space.

Because good commercial design isn’t just about making something look pretty.

It’s about creating an experience that feels intentional from the moment someone walks in to the spaces they least expect you to think about.

And yes… that means the bathroom too. 😉

Sometimes creating room for your next era begins before you ever arrive there.

This past weekend, a conversation came up about someone who loves collecting meaningful things, but also dreams of moving abroad and beginning a completely different chapter of her life.

My perspective was not that she needed to get rid of everything she loves.

It was an invitation to ask:

Does this belong in the life I am creating?

Our homes can often hold past identities, old routines and versions of ourselves that once made sense. But as we grow, we may need to become more intentional about what gets to come with us.

And when we finally meet ourselves in that new chapter, we get to design for that person.

Not who we were.

Who we have become.

That is what designing for your next chapter means to me. Creating a home that does more than reflect your past. It supports the life, energy and expression you are ready to step into.

Your home should give you energy. It should reflect your personality, support your rituals, and make everyday moments feel a little more like you.

Because good design isn’t only about how a space looks.

It’s about how you feel when you’re living in it.

The garden has officially entered its “she’s doing her best” era. 😂🌿

After being away in NY for over a week, I came home to plenty of weeds, flowers that have me second guessing everything, and questions…⁉️

So I’m calling on my garden friends…

🌸 Do I prune these back now or wait until spring?
🌿 Which plants should I leave alone?
✂️ Are there any that should be cut back before fall?

I walk through several of my plants in this reel, so I’d love your advice. Tell me what you would do, and if you have any favorite gardening resources, send those my way too!

I’m learning as I go, and honestly, that’s half the fun. Here’s to creating beautiful spaces… inside and outside. 💚
