A homeowner in North Jutland, Denmark, was preparing the ground for a new terrace when a routine garden project uncovered an extraordinary Viking Age hoard. After about an hour of digging, the homeowner encountered what initially appeared to be old metal, but the discovery turned out to contain roughly 700 pieces and fragments of silver weighing more than 40 pounds.

The hoard includes silver bars, ingots, jewelry, cut silver and 47 coins and coin fragments, along with a small figurine of Thor’s hammer. One silver ingot also carries an enigmatic runic inscription that may read “hutu,” although researchers have not yet determined whether it represents a name, ownership mark or something else.

The silver appears to have been organized according to weight, reflecting the Viking Age practice of using silver as a form of currency based on its actual weight. The coins include Arab dirhams and Anglo-Saxon issues, showing connections between Scandinavia, the Islamic world and England. The latest coin was minted in York between 921 and 925 C.E., helping researchers date the burial to the 10th century.

The hoard is reportedly around three times heavier than the largest Viking silver hoard previously discovered in Denmark.
