"I had thought it was beyond saving."

That is the sentence we hear most often when a rug with moth damage arrives at the shop. And it is almost never true.

Moths do quiet, invisible work. The adult moths themselves do not eat wool. Their larvae do. The eggs get laid in the dark, still parts of the pile, under furniture, along the fringe, in corners where the rug is rarely disturbed. The larvae feed on the wool fibers from the foundation up. By the time a family notices, there is often a bare patch, a fine dusting of wool debris, or a thin spot where the pile has thinned down to the warp threads. And the assumption is that the rug is finished.

It rarely is.

This is the step most people never see.

Professional rug cleaning is not one step. It is a full process, and this photo captures one of the most important stages in it. The soap-soaking phase. After the pre-wash dusting has pulled the dry soil out of the foundation, the rug is laid flat, saturated with cold water, and worked with wool-safe shampoo across the entire surface. A soft rotary agitator moves the shampoo evenly through the pile, from border to border, lifting oils, embedded grime, pet dander, and years of settled household particulate that a home vacuum will never reach.

This is where a rug actually gets clean.

Here is the full in-house process, start to finish:

✔️ Pre-cleaning inspection and colorfastness testing
✔️ Pre-wash dusting to lift embedded dry soil from the foundation
✔️ Cold water saturation across the entire rug
✔️ Full-immersion hand wash with wool-safe shampoo, worked through the pile with a soft rotary agitator
✔️ Enzyme treatment or deodorizing step when needed
✔️ Thorough rinse until the water runs clear
✔️ Controlled-environment drying
✔️ Grooming and pile setting
✔️ Final inspection before return

Why each step matters. The dusting removes dry soil before water is introduced, so the wash actually cleans instead of turning dust into mud. The cold water protects the natural dyes so the color does not bleed or shift. The wool-safe shampoo is formulated for animal fibers and does not strip the natural lanolin that keeps wool strong and stain-resistant. The rotary agitator spreads the shampoo evenly without stressing the fibers. The controlled dry prevents moisture from settling in the foundation and creating new odor issues down the road.
