Taking the twins to a haunted house ( Land of Illusion Adventure Park ) was sooooo much fun! People were SO ANGRY that I brought a NEWBORN to such a loud place! Then they saw what they actually were and it was incredible!!! πŸ˜†πŸ˜† So many questions and reactions.

SOLD

This is my dream kit! They were a joy to bring to life, although they did creepy out most who have seen them! I made them with high end wavy brunette mohair and brown glass eyes. The first time I saw this kit, I knew I had to have it. I've debated leaving the reborn world due to being incredibly busy lately, and wanted to go out with a bang so to speak. We'll see if I can actually tear myself away from painting. Lol I didn't intend to sell them, buuuut....was made an offer I couldn't refuse. I hope their new parents love them! Giulia and Guianna.

It's been a while and Leilani hasn't had a real photo shoot yet because life has been so busy! But here are a few of her completed. ( Turns out that I'm awful at following through with tutorials! I become so wrapped up in creating that I forget to record!)

Rooting Tutorial #2 Leilani Assembling the rooting tool

* There are many options for needles in terms of gauges and types. I prefer the 38 and 42g crown needles. Find what works best for you. The larger the gauge, the SMALLER the hole size. The crown needles have fewer barbs as well, so it makes pulling a single strand easier. I always have my barbs pointing to the right because the barb will grab a hair and push it into ⁰the vinyl easily. Another thing that is a must for me is warming the vinyl. There are warming lights for this, but I use a rice sock. Literally a new, clean sock filled with about 1.5 cups of uncooked rice. Tie a knot to keep the rice in and throw it in the microwave for about 2 minutes. Stuff this sock into the head of the kit and let it warm up for a few minutes. It gives the head more stability when rooting and the heat almost helps to seal the vinyl around the hole from the needle. Pull it out and re-warm as necessary.

Rooting tutorial #1 Leilani Hair Mapping

* I will not beginning mapping or rooting until my kit is fully sealed and cured. This is usually a couple days. Some people use chalk to map, but I prefer prisma color pencils. I can include tiny little hairs and seal them to permanence if I like, or wash it off. I usually end up going over my lines quite often during the rooting process because they just rub off. No big deal. I use a color similar to what I'll be rooting with so that if any does NOT come off, it won't be seen. I suggest looking up rooting maps on Google or Pinecrest, as there are SO MANY options. The map is basically a plan, and by following what we have drawn, the rooting process moves along "quickly." When first starting out, I did incorporate little arrows to remind myself which direction to place my needle. Whatever direction your needle is facing when poked into the vinyl, the hair will lay in that direction. More to come on that.

Tutorial #20 Leilani Final seal

*There are so many different matte varnishes and/or sealants out there. I love the glass and tile medium by Folk Art. Whatever you decide to use, make sure the ENTIRE kit is fully sealed. I brush on the medium, then pounce it off with a clean cosmetic wedge. I do multiple layers. After that, take a fine liner brush and use a gloss to seal the nails, lips, nostrils, and crease of the eyes. Be careful around the nose, because while the inside of our noses are wet, unless you have a baby with a cold, you don't want it shiney around the outside of the nostrils. With the eyes, again, unless they are crying, you don't want super shiney eyelids-just a hint of shine. Leilani is yawning, so her eyes are a tad watery. Have fun! The kit is now fully painted!
**Technical difficulties all night. Camera shut off before wishing everyone "happy painting."

Tutorial #19 Leilani Nails!

*Some kits have beautiful nails, others....you may have to fake it a bit. Use the lavendar color from the nail beds to about 1/3 of the way up. Use the blush color from the nail beds up to a little over half. Use an off white for the moons and tips. Brush strokes are okay to see here as they mimic the natural lines that nails have. Dilute the off white for the moons, and a little thicker for the tips. If you don't have the parchment color, use white with a dot of light brown.

Tutorial #18 Leilani Accent blushing and redness correcting

* Accent blushing is an optional step, but, as always, adds an element more of realism. I find that sometimes my kit is more red than I'd like. This is easily corrected using a mint or green wash. I ended up pouncing the wash over Leilani four times to tone down the red. It made a huge difference in person, if not so much on camera. Keep this layer thin, as you don't want a green baby! You should not see any green on the kit, just a gradual and subtle tone change.

Tutorial #17 Leilani Lips

*I like to add greens and blues to my babies' lips. It adds dimension. This is an optional step, but totally worth it! I did not mix colors to get the red, green, or blue, just straight from the bottle, add the distilled water, and a dot of glass and tile medium. Anything close to the colors shown will work.

Tutorial #16 Leilani Creasing and crease color

* The deeper the crease or fold, the darker the color. Creases brings out the depth in the folds. This process can take a very long time. Always use less paint than more, and tap and drag the paint through the fold. You can always add more. I vary between using a thin liner brush and a thicker one. Pointed end q-tips can also be used. Again, take your time. We don't want to see paint pooled in the creases, just a gentle, blended color.
