I had a realization recently as I was thinking about hospitality.

Maybe, hospitality is allowing yourself, as the host, to show up to the party in the same imperfect way you would let your guests show up.

It could also mean you could be hospitable and kind to the version of you that wants to get it all right and be impressive. Even if you really hope to rise above all of that…

Maybe we can be willing to be the hostess with NOT the mostest.

We can be the host who falls short but has given generously from what she had. Who made someone feel seen and valued because they were invited.

Because at the end of the day, our homes are tools for nurturing relationships and cultivating a spirit of welcome. It’s never been about us 💗

Custom home design means tailored. Made to fit YOU.

This is particularly important for people who live in bodies outside the "norm" in some way.

I was researching code requirements for stairs a while back and ran into some information that stopped me in my tracks.

Standard stair tread depth is 10". (Treads are the horizontal surface of the stairs, risers are the vertical surface.) My reference book was pointing out that this tread depth can be difficult or unsuitable for people with very large feet since their toes extend far beyond the edge of the tread.

This photo shows my shoe (size 9) on the 10" tread next to my son's shoes (size 17). If I had to do it again - knowing his future shoe size - I would have increased the depth of our treads. The stair run would have taken up more space, but it would have been worth it!

Stairs are a permanent architectural feature and one that is important to get right.

As most tall people know, this is a "tall person" problem that they navigate everywhere, but someday I hope he can have a staircase in his home that fits his feet better. Our homes should be the one place where you don't have to have these problems!

Custom interior design is about making spaces to fit your unique needs. We all have unique bodies and unique abilities. Let's embrace those and make your most personal living spaces work well for you!
