Here is our last sticky note activity post. We had some energy to burn so I took the same numbered post it notes I’ve used all week and spread them out on the floor. Called out a number and he searched for it, stood on top, and hopped that number of times. You can switch the action if you’d like. Clearly my boys were more interested in just moving and being goofy which was just fine too! The point is to play and connect and any review of number identification is just a bonus in my eyes!

Here is another sticky note brain game we play. “Which is missing” can be a memory game or a way to work on number or letter recognition/order. We stuck to numbers this week but as always you can adjust the topics. Thai works for older kids as well by including many topics from sequence of events in a story, life cycles, or even steps in a task!

Sticky notes scavenger hunts were a hit last week. We did numbers and had him find them in numerical order. It made the activity last a bit linger and provided a bit more of a challenge. This can be adjusted to be letters in a name, a phone number or any other topic you want to cover!

The “Don’t Press” game is a favorite quick activity in our house. Choose 4-6 sticky notes with letters, shapes, numbers, or colors. Pick 1 or 2 sticky notes to list for your child to NOT hit. This involves concentration, following directions, visual discrimination, working memory, and cognitive flexibility all in a low pressure and fun way. We can switch this up with what’s on the sticky notes, how many we have in front of him, or how many we list to avoid. Sometimes we combine topics to add another level of difficulty or even list attributes of the shape rather than names. (Do not hit a shape with 4 sides.) This activity can easily be scaled to fit many ages and grade levels and is low prep with simple materials!

Every once in awhile we have a box surplus. Before breaking them down we get the markers out, put the boxes in a pile, and let the kids do what they want. This most recent time, Brier made a train. He decorated while Eli put items around the house in each box. We use them until they are beat up, have another use, or recycling day comes and we break them down. This will be our last box activity for a bit. We will switch up our activity supplies this upcoming week!

While pre-planned playful activities can be great tools, ultimately, play is the best form of learning at this age. My kids are at an age where they can do similar activities just in different ways. My younger child gets to observe and imitate. My older gets practice with patience and sharing. There doesn’t need to be an end goal. They lead the play and explore, pretend, talk, dig, and pour. These are all valuable forms of learning!

While I normally make my own play dough we bought some Fourth of July colors on clearance for a quick, smaller option for our morning activities. I am surprised how fast these begin to dry out and how much of a quality difference you notice, especially over time!

Even so, it was a fun activity for both boys and Eli had a new tool introduced this morning!

We went school supply shopping today for preschool and picked up some extra supplies for home. Everyday tasks that we often do ourselves because it’s faster can be great learning opportunities for our kids. Sharpening pencils manually allows skill development in bilateral coordination, hand strength/dexterity, motor planning, and independence! To them, getting to use a new tool is exciting and rewarding when they complete the task as well.

This morning we did animal hide and seek with some disposable cups. We worked on animal names and sounds. Eli also enjoyed the sounds of squeezing the cups and exploring stacking them. We did this 10 minutes together and then he played with the cups independently for about 3 minutes before realizing I had moved to the kitchen and decided that’s where he needed to be as well.
