When I was growing up, my mother was an art historian. She brought me to museums and galleries and taught me to look closely at composition, color, pattern, and the emotions a painting or space could evoke.
Henri Matisse has been my favorite artist since I was young. I have always been drawn to the way he uses color and pattern to create a feeling. In Interior with an Etruscan Vase, the woman at the table appears peaceful and content, surrounded by plants, fruit, bold color, and layers of pattern. There is so much happening in the room, yet it still feels settled.
I channel that same idea in my work. A space can be visually interesting and full of personality while still helping the people who live there feel comfortable and at ease.
Those early experiences also taught me to pay attention. Why did one room feel exciting while another felt peaceful? Why could an object, color, or pattern completely change the way I experienced a space?
My formal NeuroDesign training eventually gave me scientific language for many things I had been noticing intuitively for years. But the curiosity began much earlier, walking through museums with my mother and learning that our surroundings have the power to affect us.
