This 1906 Rookwood factory lamp base, shape 1072C, reflects the period when Rookwood was producing some of its most sophisticated matte glazes and sculptural forms. The rich matte green glaze and deeply molded geometric decoration embody the Arts & Crafts ideal that beauty and craftsmanship should be part of everyday life. By this time, Rookwood had become one of the defining names in American decorative arts, with pieces winning awards both nationally and internationally. More than a century later, collectors continue to appreciate these early forms for their design, glaze quality, and historical significance. It’s the kind of piece that feels just as relevant today as it did in 1906. I have a feeling would approve.

Produced in Marblehead, Massachusetts from 1904 to 1936, Marblehead Pottery remains one of the purest expressions of the American Arts & Crafts movement. Founded as a therapeutic pottery workshop under Dr. Herbert Hall and later guided by master potter Arthur E. Baggs, Marblehead became renowned for its hand-thrown forms, restrained decoration, and velvety matte glazes in subtle shades of blue, gray, green, and brown.

What makes Marblehead so enduring is its simplicity. These pieces rely on proportion, form, and glaze rather than elaborate decoration, creating an aesthetic that feels as modern today as it did over a century ago. Contemporary pottery makers continue to draw inspiration from Marblehead’s refined design philosophy and understated beauty.

This group showcases the versatility of the pottery’s production, from candlesticks and vase forms to small vessels, all united by the distinctive matte blue glaze that has become synonymous with Marblehead.

Among the earliest and most desirable examples of Tiffany Studios Pine Needle desk accessories is the beaded Pine Needle inkwell. This exceptional early form features the distinctive quadruple beaded border, rich verdigris bronze patina, and luminous green Favrile glass panels that glow beautifully when illuminated.

Introduced during the formative years of Tiffany Studios’ decorative arts production, the Pine Needle pattern embodies the naturalistic design principles of the American Arts & Crafts movement. The intricate overlay of stylized pine needles transforms a simple desk accessory into a sculptural work of art.

This early example retains its original character with a wonderfully aged chocolate and verdigris bronze surface and vibrant green Favrile glass. The quadruple beading and early construction make it a particularly desirable collector’s piece and a wonderful survivor from the golden age of Tiffany Studios.

A treasure from the dawn of the twentieth century.

Today we have a beautiful example of Roseville’s Cherry Blossom pattern, introduced in 1933 and inspired by the delicate blooms of flowering cherry trees. The soft pink blossoms and rich green glaze make this one of Roseville’s most recognizable and enduring designs.

This vase stands just over 7” tall and displays wonderfully, with crisp molded decoration and excellent color.

Today is World Art Nouveau Day! Celebrated each year on June 10, World Art Nouveau Day honors a movement that transformed everyday objects into works of art through flowing lines, organic forms, and inspiration drawn directly from nature.

This Ephraim Faience bowl captures many of those ideals. Its sculptural form resembles a flower in bloom, while the rich matte green glaze enhances the sense of growth and movement found throughout Art Nouveau design.

More than a century after the movement first emerged, artists and potters continue to draw inspiration from its celebration of craftsmanship, beauty, and the natural world.

A Good Marriage? In the antiques trade, a marriage refers to two period components that did not originally leave the factory together but have been paired at some point in their history. When done well, the result can be every bit as attractive as an original combination.

This lamp is a wonderful marriage of a Hampshire Pottery base and a lotus blossom shade attributed to Handel or a Handel-era maker. The rich matte green pottery and vibrant mottled glass petals feel perfectly at home together, reflecting the natural forms and craftsmanship that defined the Arts & Crafts movement in the early 20th century.

One of my favorite parts of the antique business is stepping back and looking at the conversation that happens between objects. A stained glass lamp beside a folk art chest. Architectural fragments next to a carved figure. A 46-star flag sharing space with pottery, paintings, and pieces that have traveled far longer than any of us.

Every item here was made for a purpose, used by someone, and somehow survived long enough to find its way into this room full of stories.

Another interesting find.

This hand decorated box is possibly Scandinavian and may date to the late 18th or early 19th century.

At first glance it appears fairly simple, but opening the lid reveals a remarkable hidden world of ships, birds, and folk art decoration that has survived for generations.

It’s Matte Green Monday!

Just added this beautifully sculptural 1913 Rookwood Pottery vase with an incredible matte green glaze and strong Arts and Crafts movement feel. The form and color immediately reminded me of some of the organic matte glazes seen in Grueby pottery from the same era.

Pieces like this are a great reminder of how innovative American art pottery was in the early 20th century. The soft velvety surface, carved form, and subtle tonal variation make this one especially satisfying in hand.

Marked and dated 1913 to the underside.
