I read Stephen King's 'On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft' in high school and recall loving it then. I picked it up again yesterday and it's still as good as I remember.

Coming soon to The Hidden Gem New Buffalo!

One more round with the wood burner to clean up a few inconsistencies and smooth a few rough edges, and then we'll add the tags and get them on the road. Hopefully we can have them in store as early as next week... or sooner if I give up trying to get to New Buffalo and just put them in the mail. (My calendar is a mess. Somehow, no matter how hard I tried to keep this from happening, all of our summer things have all stacked up on top of one another and my head is already spinning! Even fitting in our upcoming wedding anniversary is now a game of Jenga!)

Artist Tip: Always take a moment to look at your work through a camera lens. It lets you inspect your pieces with fresh eyes and can reveal all sorts of details you missed before! I saw this picture and my critique list automatically doubled! 📷

Change has been brewing for The Artist & The Academic for some time and I think it's finally time to tell you what I've been up to!

Many of you know me as an Artist, but I am also a writer. I've been writing as long as I can remember and have repeatedly been told I should do it professionally. Turns out, I sort of have already.

Ten years ago, I wrote a short novel to fund a study abroad experience. [I never removed the eBook from Amazon. You can find it - poor edits and all - at: Wash Me White as Khaki]. After its launch, I became invested in my professional career, and then my art, and so I sort of stopped pursuing writing altogether.

This summer my interest was reawakened when I recalled the characters in my novel and wondered what they'd be doing now. A few days of binge writing reminded me of how much I love that world and how denying that part of me was actually a major problem. I'm not saying there is a Book 2 (but... maybe?!?) but those characters - which are apparently still very much alive and well inside of me - are definitely responsible for what came next.

I decided it was time finally to revisit that love in earnest, and, this fall, I've been taking a master's level creative writing course at a local university. It has been life changing! And not just because I'm flexing some long dormant muscles and putting out some really awesome pieces, but because it has helped me explore the life of a long deceased family member who was also a writer. I've been exploring her works and finding it very therapeutic because many of her themes focus on the same subjects I've been interested in as of late.

Anyway, this is just a note to say that The Artist & The Academic may be shifting a bit going forward to include both of these worlds. I also have a top-secret project that is brewing where I dig deeper into the works of this relative, and I'd love to share it here with you if you'd like to join me for the ride! I promise to still include some fun arts and crafts along the way! 🩷 - Lindsey, Artist & Writer

So, frustrating news... I injured my dominant hand this past weekend and we have had to pull out of the Willowbrook Farms Fall Festival & Market this coming Sunday. The Academic offered to do all the prep and set up himself, which is so sweet, but it's just not feasible. This hand makes things... we need to keep her safe and let her rest! We are beyond bummed about this!! Please make sure to head out to Willowbrook Farms for their event Sunday, from 10 AM - 3 PM, in Cassopolis. There will be a ton of fresh, local produce, artisan vendors, food trucks, flowers, activities, and self-guided farm tours! 🩷

We popped over to Art Beat today - an amazing art festival held in downtown South Bend, featuring multiple stages, tons of art, and more food trucks than you can imagine.

We picked up more whimsical art from the talented Ellen Brenneman Studio. We love her work and the brightness it adds to our house! Our Ellen Brenneman menagerie currently includes a lion, a sheep, some possums, a bison, and a couple goats. As long as she keeps showing up to Art Beat, we'll keep buying fun animals from her!

We also got some amazing paper pieces from JJRue Designs! I'm obsessed with her style. I told her that if someone took a picture of the inside of my brain, it would probably look like one of her painted upcycled journals. For sure there would be polka dots. Last year, just as we discovered her booth, we ran out of cash and had forgotten our card! I did not make that mistake this year. We didn't buy as much as I could have, but I will continue to salivate over her fun designs through social media until next year.

We also picked up this cute River Park merch from Helen Bauer Design. We live in the River Park neighborhood - not far from that sign - and love it here!

For those of you wondering why we weren't at Art Beat - this has been a really chaotic summer for us, and we honestly haven't done anything super creative since Rebel Art Fest. We've had alot of personal and professional obligations in and out of state, The Academic taught a summer course, and we're currently gearing up for school to start. I asked him last night if he was glad we hadn't signed up for this event and the truth is, we're both glad! It was nice to just go be among artists for an hour or so, playing the customer, and enjoying a few stops to talk to friends along the way! Maybe we'll see you in a booth next year, Art Beat!

[Also, please note my hoodie and Kasey's flannel. It was super cool and windy this morning! Fall is quickly approaching The Bend!]

I got to have a much needed Craft Night with a few of our nieces last night and I have to show you what H (Age 12) just casually whipped up - and this was after she told me watercolors aren't her thing! This girl is going places - very creative places!

Thanks for painting with me! I absolutely loved it!!!

Things have been a bit quiet around here on the art front since Rebel Art Fest. I got to do a little creating while visiting my mom last weekend (pics coming soon) and I shipped out a pair of earrings last week, but the home studio is currently a mess. Rebel Art boxes are still stacked by the stairs. I'll get to those this weekend. (And all the dust that still lingers inside!) This week, though, I'm in the classroom, enjoying a week-long course on relief printmaking at the South Bend Museum of Art! [Check out my first ever print below!] I honestly cannot believe I've never tried any kind of printmaking before besides a fun hands-on demo during a historical tour at Hatch Show Print in Nashville! Anyway, this is a huge art bucket list item of mine and I'm so pumped to be able to finally learn. This course is so much fun - great instructor, solid tools, incredible makers space, and all that - but mostly because I'm in class with students who are two and three decades younger than I am. Oh, to be a young artist again! The future of these students is bright. They are so, so good! If you haven't sat down with a group of young people to learn something lately, I highly encourage you to! Don't teach them. Learn with them. There are so many lessons in that process! [In case you didn't know... art is always more than just art.🩷] Cannot wait for Day 2!
