After nearly a year off, I'm finally able to start retraining my hands to weave. I had the pleasure of designing a linen & wool band for a recent commission. A big thanks goes out to Chad at The Keystone Canuck, Historic Tradesmen for convincing me to give it a shot.

I'm a firm believer that you need to know how to care for your tools. Know how they should look and feel. Check them regularly. Replace worn pieces. Repair them as needed.

I tend to weave with a high tension and need to keep an eye on the hardware. I recently replaced the the t-nut and bolt from the tension bar on my maple inkle loom. Both pieces were stripped and would have eventually failed, quite possibly in the middle of a project.

I've had some questions about my looms. Decided to start with the newcomer.

This is a Harrisville Designs Belt Loom. From what I can find, it doesn't seem to be in production at this time. I got this cutie "used" on Ebay around this past Christmas. I say "used" because it surprisingly still had its original demo piece on it. The yarn was rotting off. I dont believe it was ever used!

I cleaned it up, and conditioned the wood really well. Got to take care of your tools folks. The rigid heddle and the stands are actually on loan from my reproduction medieval loom.

It currently has a double faced band setup on it. However, I'm willing to admit that I dont have enough experience with this style of weaving, so after a few bad starts, it will now moving over to my oak inkle loom soon. I'll rewarp this loom with something a little more straight forward to practice on.

After two frustrating days fighting my new loom, I decided to take a break and pull out another project. I think this one is important to talk about.

Every year I collect my thrums and other yarn scraps. I tie them together, toss them on a spool, and wait. Wait for them to add up throughout the year. When I hit the perfect amount, I throw it on a loom and make the most random piece/s of the year.

Each band is unique and beautiful in its own way. There are memories tied to all of my projects. Emotions to be relived through the process of recycling and weaving the thrums, creating new patterns to appreciate. Some years, I only have one. Other years, there are many. It helps bring a sense of balance and closure to each year of weaving. It reminds me where I was, what I experienced, and where I could go in the future.

What did you doing the quarantine? I spent a chunk of it working my way through Norwegian Pick-Up Bandweaving by Heather Torgenrund. Kept things simple with a solid white cotton background and a fun self striping sock wool blend.

Picked up a new reference book for my birthday a few weeks ago. Been having a grand time learning doubled face tape weaving. Excited for the possibilities it will open up in design.

I think I've finally mastered this cobweb linen. At least I'm comfortable enough to move onto the next stage with it. For once, I actively have a predestined use for this test band! The shock! 😉

Getting back to a test piece with my stock of gorgeous cobweb linen. It's so delicate and finicky, bit should prove to make some lovely natural fibre pieces in the future.

What has the Woven Wafflings workshop been up to lately? Sewing and cross stitch mostly tbh. I would like to say welcome any newcomers from our past weekend's visit to Th Old Fort in Ft. Wayne, IN. If you're looking for 18th century tapes, there are a selection available on our Ko-fi page. We also do custom work, so feel free to reach out.

I'm currently working with a tubular band on my 18th century style box loom. I had set it up for a weaving demo this past weekend, but never got to it. Kitchen demos took over the whole weekend!

We are back up and running!
