I recently traveled to Germany and one of my main goals during the trip was to secure honey from a local beekeeper. I was fortunate enough to obtain honey in 2 different cities. I stumbled across the first honey being sold in the gift shop of a museum in the city of Mainz. As I spoke with the lady working in the gift shop, I discovered her husband was a beekeeper and we shared some stories about beekeeping and her husband’s frustrations with swarm control. I provided some advice on how I managed swarming and we spoke about the honey I was purchasing. It comes from a group of beekeepers that work collectively to promote conservation education for the community and schools, while selling their honey to fund their continued efforts.
I discovered the 2nd jar of honey in the city of Homburg when I was at a flea market, which are called Flohmärktes in German. I was quite impressed with the selection of items and it was very similar to our local flea markets. I initially approached the vendor because I saw a honey sign on his table and I was interested in purchasing it. Although his English was as bad as my German, we were able to share our beekeeping experiences through pictures and videos. After tasting his delicious honey, I secured a jar and felt successful with meeting my honey goal.
If you have never traveled to Europe, I highly recommend considering it someday. This was my 3rd time visiting Germany and it gets better every time. Navigating a foreign country can be intimidating, but they have several cruises that travel the Rhine river with stops at multiple locations. This will allow you to experience some of the best locations without being overwhelmed with planning and navigating.
