Mother’s Day in America is tomorrow. I’m thinking about my own mom and how remarkably tough she was persevering thru raising 8 of us hooligans. How I’ve inherited her knack for taking what’s in the pantry and making a gourmet meal- she wasn’t a teacher or cared to have anyone in her kitchen so yes, it’s genetic. Her granddaughter Caroline is now one of those cooks too. How determined she was to do things on her own if she had to. How I’m just as stubborn and that caused so many arguments when I was young. Yet is why I’m determined and capable in my own life. How she loved to have music on in the house and dance and sing. Yeah, I do too and her granddaughter is a music graduate. 🥰. Again, genetics are strong. Wishing all the moms and grandmothers out there a special day celebrating the hardest yet most amazing blessing. And to those of us who no longer have their moms here to share, I see you and know how challenging tomorrow will be and I’m keeping you in my heart too. Once a mom, always a mom 💕

Let’s talk about the most under appreciated room in a home- the laundry room. It’s not only a necessity, for some it’s a luxury if you have one bigger than a coat closet. So if you’ve got one then why does it have to be just a machine and folding table? Why can’t it have a personality, make you maybe smile a little while you have to be doing the actual laundry?? These 3 rooms we did in the last 12 months and all have different budgets. One was just a new tile floor to replace the old vinyl that the flooding washer destroyed. But I had to add some fun wallpaper for this fab family to wake up the windowless room. This room makes me smile! Another was quickly pulled together with box store cabinetry and a butcher block countertop after the budget was maxed when we added a new master suite. It still makes a fantastic and cheerful space in an unexpected green color and lots of storage for these young homeowners. Then you get to work on a custom home project where the options and needs change- custom cabinetry that allows cubbies to fit the exact size of several laundry baskets; enough cabinetry to hold a dozen beach towels and cleaning tools etc; a unique tile floor and colors that fit the outside view from your window. Then I also had to bring in wallpaper with ferns matching what’s growing outside their door. The point is this- whatever your budget, try to create a space that doesn’t feel like an afterthought. Add how ever much storage you can, get creative with your budget if you have to and don’t be afraid of giving it a personality. If you have to be doing the laundry you might as well smile a little while at it!

Checking on a new build with clients today on Sebago Lake. What I love is how every project on the lake is so unique. These folks leaned in to a little contemporary style for their retreat. Black metal roofing along with dark board and batten siding and the warmth of Douglas fir for posts and similar color decking and soffits. This house has been so fun to work on. Stay tuned as the work continues!

Celebrating our friend and her amazing photography and the art direction she does for Edible Maine magazine. Their new spring issue is out and though it was a cool and foggy night in Portland, Maine, we couldn’t be more excited to share our sisterhood with each other and try some of the fab spring-inspired goodies in the new issue. We love you Lauren and they are so lucky to have you as we are to call you our friend! XOXO .messy.cookie

2nd post of our condo renovation project. I didn’t get staged pics at the end because the clients were too anxious to get in. My job was to project manage the renovation and take lead on the design. The furniture and decor items belonged to the homeowner and they brought in from storage. In pic 1 you now can see from the living room all the way to the end of the kitchen- there was once a large wall right in the middle of that space that housed a half bath, water heater lots of wasted space. I love how seamlessly it flows now but the process to get there tried our patience and brain cells. Anything’s possible for a cost and this one got expensive. Once the wall was removed I had a smaller powder room added on the opposite side where a small pantry once sat. I love how fun the wallpaper brightened up the walls and the petite wall-hung sink keeps the floor empty. Speaking of floors- love the wood look tile set in a herringbone pattern- the color matches the new hardwood oak floors laid everywhere. .construction.llc tile provided by plumbing provided by wallpaper by

I recently completed a whole condo renovation project along side my contractor Eric .construction.llc and the transformation is nothing short of amazing. We walked into a unit that held all of its original 1980s features and the grossness of being a smoker’s home. When the guys started demo, the hazmat suits and respirators along with air scrubbers had to be employed. The ni****ne was so thick and oozing down the walls like a syrup- the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen. Throw in a horribly dysfunctional design and layout and we had our work cutout for this one. Everything was demo’d with layouts reconfigured to create an open plan on the main floor, moving around bathrooms and taking down walls and opening up the dark stairwells. Lots of troubleshooting and collaboration between us made this one of our favorite and most challenging projects to date. Sharing here is just the much larger kitchen and powder room that we created- the before and after photos speak volumes. Stay tuned for more of the other spaces! cabinetry stone plumbing tile
