The first stage of my process for larger paintings is always a digital sketch because I can quickly get an idea of which direction I’d like to push the painting.

This is one of a few references I’m using for my next painting which is currently untitled. Comment title suggestions :)

Over the last few days, I’ve been trying to decide on an idea for my next painting. I’m planning a second 24 x 36 inch piece, but I had quite a few ideas, so I took four of them and created digital sketches to help narrow things down.

After sharing them in my stories, gathering some votes, and doing a few more sketches of my own, I decided to go with this scene of the Shotover River near Queenstown, New Zealand.

Using the digital sketch alongside some small thumbnail value studies from my sketchbook, I painted this 6 x 4 inch colour study to refine the composition and my colour choices before starting the larger work.

You can see each stage of my process quite clearly here. Working from dark to light and from background to foreground as the painting comes together.

If your favourite was one of the other ideas, don’t worry! They’re still contenders for future paintings, big or small.

What a weekend!

A huge thank you to everyone at .arttrail for organising such an amazing event.

Not only was it a fantastic first experience exhibiting my work, but I also thoroughly enjoyed exploring the trail and seeing the incredible variety of artwork on display from so many talented artists.

I really hope this is an event that continues to grow year after year. Feeling inspired, I’m already planning my next 24 x 36 inch painting and can’t wait to get started.

I’m excited to announce I am now going to start producing ACEOs!

First, what is an ACEO? ACEO stands for Art Card, Editions and Originals. These are small, original and highly collectable artworks that are the same size as a standard trading card (3.5 × 2.5 inches). They’re an accessible and affordable way to collect original artworks.

My first 3 are already up on my website with free shipping (within the UK). If you’re interested in owning an original piece at an affordable price point take a look! 💻 Link in bio

Only 5 days to go until the Artbourne Art Trail!
Here’s everything you need to know:

• The trail runs on:
Saturday 30th May, 10:30am–4:30pm
Sunday 31st May, 11:30am–3pm

• My pieces ‘Hooker Valley’, ‘Half Dome’, and ‘Striding Edge’ will be exhibited in St. Oswald’s Church (DE6 1AN). ‘Half Dome’ and ‘Striding Edge’ will also be available to purchase.

• To follow the Art Trail, you’ll need a wristband available from Handmade Design (DE6 1GG) or F’coffee (DE6 1GH).

• Wristbands are just £5 and give you access to the entire trail, not just the exhibition.

• Dogs are welcome too :)

I’ll be taking a look around myself on Saturday, hope to see some of you there.
