Muse Monday: Sam Park - Born in 1949 in Seoul, Korea, Sung Sam Park began painting at the age of twelve. His talent and teaching abiltites were quickly recognized and just a year later, while still a junior high school student, he taught at the local high school. After graduating from Jung Ang University in 1973, Park traveled to France. Here he studied painting and lived with other young artists in Paris. His artistic style still clearly reflects the inspiration of the French Impressionists.

Park’s ability to capture light and paint subject matter of a broad range has contributed to his tremendous success.
The internal prism through which Park refracts the scene before him produces a soft, romantic light, a manifestation of the sense of harmony and serenity that he seeks to experience and convey. Using the magic and warmth of light as his Muse, Park’s work has inspired countless viewers.

While some artists seek to challenge and confront the viewer, Park seeks to reassure. Next I paint the sea. Finally, I fill in that which lies between.” Soon the canvas is filled with beautiful, refreshing, invigorating color, as if you could feel the gentle breezes that are blowing in from the Mediterranean.

Sam Park currently resides in California. His work has been exhibited in several U.S. Galleries. In 1996 his works were exhibited for the first time at the New York Art Expo.

Muse Monday Artist: Michael Godard

Godard’s world of art invites us in to his lighthearted perspective of life that surrounds us, mirroring our lives through martinis with animated olives, drunken grapes, dancing strawberries, including his own vices of gambling and the good life. His unique portrayal of fun is an exciting combination of imagination and subtle humor. With Optimism and Vice as his muses, Godard has redefined art as we know it and, of course, given it a punch line!

Godard’s work is highly collected by all kinds of people, including movie stars, rock stars and private collectors. He has appeared on numerous news programs and television shows including A&E’s Criss Angel’s Mind Freak, the Biography Channel, CTV, MTV, HBO and featured on covers of magazines across the nation. A documentary on Godard’s life has won numerous awards.

Olives entered the picture when Godard was struggling through his daughter Paige’s illness, spending long hours in the hospital when she was in a coma. Desperate for some cheerful element to keep him afloat emotionally, he started a new series of paintings, bringing olives to life in humorous scenarios, rendering them in bright colors against a dramatic black background.

Michael Godard has dedicated himself to philanthropic causes through his art. “The funds I help raise save lives - it’s the most important thing I do,” declares Godard. In 2006, his 16-year-old daughter lost her battle with brain cancer. “All the money in the world cannot bring her back, but the funds I help raise for a cure will help save another child,”said Godard.

His continuing effort has driven him far beyond the canvas, bringing him closer to his goal of raising money to help win the war against cancer. Current projects are in the works making this achievement happen

Muse Monday - Artist: Slava Ilyayev
Born in 1970 in Baku, Azerbaijan (formerly part of the U.S.S.R.), Israeli artist, Slava Ilyayev is a master of colorful and vivid compositions, which highlight light and shadow. His art is exemplified by swathes of color raised above the canvas, resulting in textured compositions that transform nature into an exciting, joyful, and vibrant force. Ilyayev’s works have been shown in various group and one-man exhibitions throughout Israel, the United States, Europe and Asia.

The notion of togetherness and intimacy is essential toward understanding not only Ilyayev’s founding philosophy, but also his winsome subject matter. Some might say these notions are Ilyayev’s muse, inspiring him to create works of art that bring people together. Although his autumnal colors and meandering pathways suggest the weight of change, he finds his imagery in the reward of affection and the nostalgia of a moment.

Ilyayev’s signature, elevated texture is enabled by his tool of choice: the palette knife. He first creates a flat composition with a base color to establish a cohesive color palette. Afterwards, he begins to thickly layer on paint and adds graphic elements using a small paintbrush and black paint. An Ilyayev painting culminates with the addition of more swathes of paint, color, and texture. Due to the thickly layered paint, Ilyayev’s artwork can take upwards of a year to completely dry.

Peter Max’s artwork was first associated with the counterculture and psychedelic movements of the late 1960s and early 1970s. He is known for using bursts of color, often containing much or all of the visible spectrum. Having a fascination for space and astronomy since he was a child lent an out of this world quality to his work.

His colorful posters full of intergalactic delights and psychedelic imagery were an instant hit with the new generation of 60’s counterculture kids. His work would lead him to projects with many artists from the original Woodstock concert. Having always has a deep connection to music he felt right at home, and always inspired. Painting posters, album covers and other commissions for many Woodstock artists over the following decades.

With music as his Muse, Max brought beautifully colorful and fantastically psychedelic art into the world. Working with multiple media including painting, drawing, etchings, collage, print making, sculpture, video, and digital imagery, as well as “mass media” as being another “canvas” for his creative expression.

“I love so many different types of music—hard rock, bebop, jazz fusion, R&B. And I’ve loved meeting and painting so many amazing artists like Lionel Richie, Ronnie Wood, Sia, Steven Tyler, Swizz Beatz, Taylor Swift, James Moody, The Fifth Dimension, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and Michael Jackson. It makes me smile thinking about each one of them.”

Muse Monday

Romero Britto

Brazilian born Artist Romero Britto was inspired at an early age by bright colors and bold visuals. Growing up poor in Brazil he used art to bring happiness to him and those around him. That happiness has been his Muse ever since.

Founder of the Happy Art Movement, Britto has used his works, both private and public, to bring happiness, fun, love, and hope to art fans everywhere and inspiring millions worldwide.

He is a firm believer that, “Art is too important not to share.” Therefore he has created innumerous public art installations so everyone can feel the happiness and optimism his paintings are meant to inspire.

As a child he would sketch on scraps of cardboard and paper, drawing inspiriation from artists like, Toulouse Lautrec, Pablo Picasso, and Henri Matisse. Using geometric shapes, vivid colors, and pop culture references, Roberto found his voice and a style dubbed “neo-pop cubism.” He created art out of optimism, lifting him out of his surroundings as a youngster, and all the way to Miami in the 80s.

A major campaign for Absolut Vodka in 1989 rocketed him to fame in America. His work with Absolut saw him compared to heaven hitters of the time, Keith Haring and Andy Warhol. Since then he’s become one of the most licensed artists in history. Working with brands like, Grand Marnier, Apple Computers, Pepsi Cola, IBM, Disney, Mini Cooper, BMW, Audi, Bentley, Movado, Volvo, Campari, the Mariner of the Seas for the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. He has also illustrated several books published by Simon & Schuster and Rizzoli.

Today’s Artist - Maya Green

Maya Green, has lived and worked all over the world, and found inspiration everywhere. Over the years she has spent time in Enakievo, Donetsk, Nizhnevartovsk, Anapa, Tiberias, New York and Saint Paul. Recently living and working in both Tel Aviv and Los Angeles.

One might say that the world is her muse. Taking inspiration from the natural landscapes around her, many of her early works inspired by the Sea of Galilee. After immigrating to Israel, to the city of Tiberias, she was energized and inspired by the city, its picturesque beauty surrounding her breathing life into her work.

“I consider myself a global citizen. Painting connects me to the world and allows me to express myself and translate what I see and feel onto canvas and paper. The more I think about my art, the more I think it is a gift from God and my mission is to share it.” -Maya Green

Having always been fascinated by the interaction of color and light, her travels have greatly inspired her work. Absorbing all the new sights and colors of a city as she lived and worked her way around the world.
