Rug blocking is the answer. 🧵

And despite how it may look, the process is completely harmless when done correctly. The staples are positioned around the rug’s fibers—not through them—to gently hold the rug in its proper shape while it dries.

It’s a simple step that makes a huge difference in the final result.

We found this antique Chinese rug on Marketplace, and it had definitely seen better days.

Missing knots, exposed knot heads, old repairs, and plenty of character. We could have dyed it or given it an antique wash to make it look newer—but we decided to do something different.

We restored it while letting its age remain part of the rug’s story.

Not every imperfection needs to be erased. Sometimes, they’re what make an antique special.

Every rug tells a story. This one just needed a little help telling its next chapter.

After washing, we carefully staple the rug to maintain its proper shape while it dries, helping prevent curling, shifting, and uneven edges.

Professional rug cleaning starts long before the rug ever touches water.

This is the dust collector filter from our rug duster after one week of use. We change it every week because removing pounds of dry dirt before washing is one of the most important steps in getting a rug truly clean.

Most of the soil trapped in a rug is dry grit, dust, and debris. If you skip this step, you’re washing all of that deeper into the fibers.

It’s not the most glamorous part of the process—but it might be the most important.
