Just put up the drawings from the first "Footsteps of our Elders" project. These were done by residents of Riverview Retirement Community. Chaplan Yvette Schock.is bringing artists to the community for the purpose of engaging the senses and connecting to spirit and nature.
Working with various wet and dry mediums, residents were asked to reflect on their feet, how they connect to Earth, what journeys they've enabled one to take and the sensations of various surfaces they come in contact with.
After another group has completed their drawings, I'll be working to create a unified piece that will hang near the chapel and dining hall.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to step (haha)out of my comfort zone in an effort to bring meaningful moments to people nearing the end of their life. I am also grateful to for all her help both preparing and delivering the project.
I haven't spent much time with people at this stage, whether because our culture refuses to embrace all stages of life or simply because of circumstance, I can't know. The experience has certainly had an impact on me that I think will affect how I prepare for my transition to elderhood..
