What’s a navette ring?

“Navette” is French for “little boat,” and in jewelry it describes this wonderfully elongated, pointed shape. It became especially fashionable during the Victorian era, when jewelers used the long silhouette to create dramatic clusters that stretched beautifully along the finger.

This example dates to about 1880, with a natural, likely untreated Ceylon sapphire at its center, surrounded by old mine cut and rose cut diamonds, all set in 18 karat gold. And that sapphire! Depending on the light, it shifts from violet blue to a rich cobalt.

It’s a grand dame of a ring, and a rather fabulous little lesson in Victorian jewelry.

What’s That? Wednesday: A Victorian Love Story in Gold 💙

This extraordinary English locket was handcrafted in about 1870 from heavy 18 karat gold. On its softly glowing surface, a turquoise forget me not blooms within a halo of fifty five rose cut diamonds.

Then you open it.

Tucked safely inside is the original hand painted portrait of a bearded Victorian gentleman. We may never know his name or the person who wore his likeness close to their heart, but more than 150 years later, he is still here.

What’s That Wednesday!

This week’s mystery is something you don’t see every day—a French Regency silver gilt tiara that has survived for more than 200 years, still tucked safely inside its original fitted presentation box.

It’s easy to think of tiaras as royal treasures, but during the Regency period they became fashionable among wealthy women across Europe. Inspired by the elegance of ancient Greece and Rome, they were worn to court, grand balls, and formal occasions where style was every bit as important as status.

What makes this one especially exciting is the survival of its original box. Most have long since disappeared, making it a wonderful reminder that this was once a cherished possession, carefully preserved through generations.

I’ll be sharing a closer look at the craftsmanship in today’s video.

This exceptional English 18 karat gold watch chain dates to about 1890-1900 and is marked on every link with the English crown and 18 for 18 karat gold. The T-bar bears the maker’s mark of J.W. Benson Ltd., the celebrated London watchmaker.
Measuring 17.5 inches long and weighing 59.19 grams, it features a highly sought-after paperclip link design and remains wonderfully wearable more than a century after it was made.
