I'd like to take a minute to show you a new and wondrous musical instrument I've picked up for myself. As you may know, we sell stringed instruments in our shop at the Louisiana Renaissance Festival and we were fortunate enough to learn of and meet Gilbert Hattier, a local luthier who supplies the lyres in our shop. I instantly fell in love with their sweet, melodious sound and just had to give them a try. I gravitated towards the pictured lyre which is Gil's interpretation of the lyre depicted in carvings and paintings of Gunnar, a historical king of Burgundy, who was bound and thrown into the snake pit to die as he played his lyre with his toes. Anyone who knows me personally also knows we have a female German Shepherd named Gunnar, although her name is derived from Norse mythology based on the Valkyries. It just seems this lyre was meant for me. No matter what you play on it, it's hard to make it sound bad. I find it very relaxing and meditative and it has been picked up and played often over the last few weeks.
There are still lyres in our shop so come see us and we will show you other beautiful lyres that Gil has built. Remember, this is the last weekend of the 2019 Louisiana Renaissance Festival season so don't miss out! ~ Dee
