Most kitchens are slight variations of one another. Lower and upper cabinets attached to the wall in one configuration or another. They all resemble the same boring options.
When we gutted our traditional kitchen, I wanted to build an unfitted kitchen or what’s commonly called a freestanding kitchen.
This type of kitchen allows room for freestanding furniture pieces rather than installing a wall of built in cabinets. I wanted to highlight the beautiful windows, bring the outdoors in and create a beautiful, casual gathering place for family and friends.
We mixed a modern steel cabinet (attached to the wall) above a vintage freestanding map case that we pull away from the wall when we need an extra serving counter.
We also installed a TV at the end of our island and added a soft seating zone that allows us to enjoy the morning news and a cup of hot brew.
If you’re craving a less uniform look and yearn for a kitchen that feels more like a beautifully decorated space, consider an unfitted kitchen! Think outside the norm and figure out a way to mix in your well loved vintage pieces that add character and warmth.
