Do you understand branch circuit general requirements, conductor sizing, and overcurrent protection?
General Requirements
The branch circuit is defined as the conductors between the final overcurrent protective device (OCPD) protecting the circuit and the outlets. Branch circuits account for most circuits run in any electrical installation, so you must be familiar with these rules. It is crucial to understand what a branch circuit is, where it starts, and where it ends to apply many of these rules properly.
Article 210 provides the general requirements for branch circuits. These include requirements for receptacle outlets, lighting outlets, conductor sizing, overcurrent protection, identification, and GFCI/AFCI protection.
Branch Circuit Conductor Sizing
Branch-circuit conductors must have an ampacity no less than the calculated load and must have an ampacity no less than 125 percent of the continuous loads, plus 100 percent of the noncontinuous loads [210.19(A)(1)].
Branch Circuit Overcurrent Protection
The overcurrent protective device must have an ampere rating not less than 125 percent of the continuous loads, plus 100 percent of the noncontinuous loads [210.20(A)].
