Well, the plan was to make my first blowfish, but the briar had other plans. Nothing like an unforeseen pit to ruin the piece.

This little cutty was always a mystery to me. Red clover, no stamping, and no record of a cutty being made according to the shape number charts I could find. Thanks to the help of Nathan Davis from Kaywoodie I was able to get some answers yesterday at the Chicago Pipe Show.

There were a few pieces made at some point but the cutty was never put into production, which is why there was no recorded shape number. These pipes weren’t stamped due to the very thin shank that would’ve likely cracked from the pressure of being stamped. And the red clover signifies it as being a non-production piece.

The history of Kaywoodie over the last 175 years is wild, and there’s always something more to learn while collecting these awesome pieces.

Heading to the Chicago Pipe Show in the morning to check things out. My first pipe show attendance without being a vendor, maybe next year. But in addition to some stuff for customers who have reached out, I’ll be bringing these very seldom seen gems along. An unsmoked shank logo Kaywoodie, a Kaywoodie cutty shape with red clover, and a sealed tin of Sir Walter Raleigh. Never know what can happen at a pipe show!
