Today’s Petal Pickers’ Pick features Sam who has helped out on the farm over multiple seasons. Sam’s favorite flower on the farm today is delphinium. Sam says: It’s the prettiest thing we’ve got going on! It’s so hard to find flowers in that shade of indigo blue. The super long stem looks awesome in a bouquet or in a bundle by itself and the shape fills out an arrangement really nicely. It’s a really elegant flower, very dainty and pretty, with so many different colors on every petal! It’s always the first thing I notice in a bouquet – it’s so eye-catching and vibrant that it really jumps out at you!

Coming to you by the buckets full Tower Grove Farmers' Market tomorrow 8-12:30.

Here is this week’s bittersweet feature of Petal Pickers’ Picks, where an Urban Buds team member talks about their favorite flower of the week!! Read below for full story.

Andy came to us 6 years ago knowing absolutely zero about flowers or gardening. And today we are celebrating his departure from Urban Buds to move into a different position within the industry. He will be going to U City in Bloom as a horticulturalist! Many of you may not know Andy because he’s always been behind the scenes working on the farm and does not do farmers’ markets. He’s grown into a trusted employee over the years, leading the crew in daily farm operations. We are more than proud of all of his accomplishments and we hate to see him go! But it’s important to move on up! He got a fantastic job offer and they knew exactly what they were getting when he walked in the door! We’re so excited for his future endeavors and his success in the field of horticulture. Congratulations Andy, we will miss you!

When asked his favorite flower this week, This is Andy’s answer

Strawflower is my #1 funky and fun flower! I think it’s a very interesting flower because it looks to have a soft texture but then you realize why it’s called strawflower – it’s considered a “growing dried flower.” It’s alive but it behaves very similar to a dried flower! Strawflower comes in so many colors including mixed varieties. It needs cold temperatures to get started but then thrives in the heat! I really like it because it’s very diverse in its uses – it’s a beautiful, vibrant, live cut flower and it retains the exact same color and texture when dried. It’s a great cut-and-come-again flower and it’s also a second chance flower, so if you miss cutting and they blow out in the field, they’re just as pretty to dry when fully open! And if you leave blooms on at the end of the season, the color holds true even through the cold days of winter! We will have these bright, bold & beautiful bunches tomorrow 8-12:30

The moments that give us joy, right when we needed it!~

This is the launch of our new weekly series we’ve named Petal Pickers’ Picks! Each week a staff member will talk about some of their farm favorites for that week. We’re hoping that it will serve as a little eye candy and stimulate you for the weekend market, both at the on Sunday and at Grove on Saturday. As we move forward on these Thursday afternoon posts, we would love any of your thoughts, comments, and stories about the week’s particular flower! We think this will be a fun way to have more interaction with you than just at market! Enjoy!

This week’s Petal Pickers’ Pick is the first harvest of our lisianthus! Mimo’s kicking it off with her pick!
Commonly called Poor Man’s Rose, lisianthus was actually my very first substantial crop as a beginner farmer back in the day! It was brand new on the flower market. I was a brand new grower, green behind the ears, when sitting at the bar at the conference over a couple of beers some 30-odd years ago, experienced grower Frank Arnsoky of asked me if I had heard about this brand new flower called lisianthus. He grabbed a beer napkin and proceeded to write down everything I needed to know – who to order the plugs from, how to grow it, what to look out for – he shared everything! I went home with this bar napkin and treated it like a bible, following every instruction on it. The following season was my first crop of lisianthus and that’s when I knew I really could actually earn a living at flower farming! Lisianthus comes in an array of colors, it has a 2-week vase life, is often used as a formal flower in weddings and events, and is also commonly used in farmers’ market bouquets or straight bunches. Totally stoked to have our very first harvest of lisianthus this season in our Best Buds bouquets this weekend! What do you think?!

This is Mother’s Day, the Superbowl of flowers and we are here to help you score a touchdown with your mom! It’s also my birthday week! So it was a delight to take the time to enjoy a quick visit from the art students of Barack Obama Elementary School! I don’t think it’s any secret how we feel about spending time with our city kids, talking about agriculture and why flowers are important! Speaking of flowers being important, there are fabulous options on our website for unique, creative, specialty blooms – including the old fashioned Mother’s Day classic, peonies straight from Miranda’s grandma Martha’s garden! These were some of the early plants that we planted on the farm. We actually drove to Wisconsin, dug them up, and planted them here at Urban Buds years ago, so they are fully matured and producing loads of blooms! These old fashioned varieties are spectacular, huge, and have that classic fragrance of your grandma’s peonies! There are lots of options on our website, reasonably priced for the sage in your life. Order online now – the best blooms are going quickly! Orders are already on the move!! Do we have yours?
