The moments that give us joy, right when we needed it!~
This is the launch of our new weekly series we’ve named Petal Pickers’ Picks! Each week a staff member will talk about some of their farm favorites for that week. We’re hoping that it will serve as a little eye candy and stimulate you for the weekend market, both at the on Sunday and at Grove on Saturday. As we move forward on these Thursday afternoon posts, we would love any of your thoughts, comments, and stories about the week’s particular flower! We think this will be a fun way to have more interaction with you than just at market! Enjoy!
This week’s Petal Pickers’ Pick is the first harvest of our lisianthus! Mimo’s kicking it off with her pick!
Commonly called Poor Man’s Rose, lisianthus was actually my very first substantial crop as a beginner farmer back in the day! It was brand new on the flower market. I was a brand new grower, green behind the ears, when sitting at the bar at the conference over a couple of beers some 30-odd years ago, experienced grower Frank Arnsoky of asked me if I had heard about this brand new flower called lisianthus. He grabbed a beer napkin and proceeded to write down everything I needed to know – who to order the plugs from, how to grow it, what to look out for – he shared everything! I went home with this bar napkin and treated it like a bible, following every instruction on it. The following season was my first crop of lisianthus and that’s when I knew I really could actually earn a living at flower farming! Lisianthus comes in an array of colors, it has a 2-week vase life, is often used as a formal flower in weddings and events, and is also commonly used in farmers’ market bouquets or straight bunches. Totally stoked to have our very first harvest of lisianthus this season in our Best Buds bouquets this weekend! What do you think?!
