Washhouse Inspirations - Washhouse Apothecary

In June of 2016, I was searching for a home—a quiet place in the country, a spot with history and character. What I found was a newly built house on a very old property. The previous home, built in 1900, had succumbed to time, so the owner and his carpenter friend built a new house in the same timeless style. Still standing on the land was the origin

al garage—perhaps once a carriage house—and the rough stone foundation of what had been the WashHouse. Just months before I arrived, the WashHouse itself had been lost in a fire. Yet, as I settled in and began to make the place my home, that little foundation sparked my imagination. I often found myself daydreaming about the WashHouse—what a wonderful place it would have been to prepare and store herbs, potions, and notions. At the time, I was busy preparing my Saturday Market table, making Comfort Cozys, and tending my beehives. Beekeeping quickly taught me the need for a remedy for bee stings. My search for relief led me to Plantain, a humble weed once used by Southwest tribes for snake bites. Inspired, I made my first tincture, Plantain Tincture. Later, I learned about Bentonite Clay, and the idea to combine the two came naturally. That blend became my first Sting Kit—soon joined by other old-time remedies. One discovery led to another, and my tincture shelf blossomed into something much greater: WashHouse Apothecary. Guided by God, Mother Nature, and the wisdom of our ancestors, I found myself uncovering old remedies and re-imagining them for today. Out of this passion grew WashHouse Inspirations, and eventually my online store, WashHouse Apothecary, shopwashhouse.com. Every product is born of curiosity, research, and love for the healing gifts of nature. The WashHouse may be gone, but its spirit lives on—in every remedy, every tincture, and every story I get to share with you.

🌿 Deep Dive: Liver Rescue 🔬

We usually think of Broadleaf Plantain as our go-to skin remedy for bee stings and scraped knees, but for my Grow, Gather, Heal book, I found a study that completely changes the game on how we view this plant's internal medicine.

We know our livers take a beating from modern life—specifically from over-the-counter drugs like Acetaminophen (Tylenol). I've summarized a fascinating 2015 study that looks at how this common driveway "w**d" actually helps the liver repair itself.

🛡️ The Setup: Calming the Storm
Researchers induced liver toxicity using Acetaminophen to create a massive storm of inflammation, then treated it with different extracts of Plantago major to see if our favorite w**d could calm things down.

🧬 The Secret Mechanism: Activating Your Own Steroids
This is the most exciting part of the phytochemistry! The study found that Plantago major didn't just suppress inflammation on its own; it ramped up the activity of a specific enzyme called 11β-HSD type 1.
In Plain English: It acts like a biological switch. This enzyme converts inactive cortisone into active cortisol right inside the liver tissue. Essentially, the herb triggers the liver to produce its own local supply of anti-inflammatory steroids to heal the damage!

🔥 Muffling the Cytokine Alarms
Liver injury causes a massive spike in proinflammatory cytokines like TNF-α, IL-1α, and IL-1β—these are the chemical alarm bells screaming "Damage!"
🔹 The Result: Treatment with Plantago extracts muffled those alarms, significantly lowering these levels and preventing the inflammation from spiraling out of control.

⚗️ Apothecary Tip: Tincture vs. Tea
For the homestead herbalists asking how to actually prep this medicine, the study gave us a clear answer by comparing water (tea) to alcohol extracts.
🔹 The Winner: The alcohol extracts (just like a strong tincture we would make at home) showed significantly higher anti-inflammatory activity. They inhibited lipoxygenase (an inflammation enzyme) by over 20%, compared to just 12% for the water extract. The tincture was also much more effective at boosting that crucial steroid-activating enzyme in the liver.
