At Joshua Allen Design, we believe everyone deserves to feel at home.

As an LGBTQ-owned business, Pride Month holds a special meaning for us. It's a reminder that home is more than beautiful finishes and thoughtfully designed spaces—it's a feeling of belonging, comfort, safety, and being able to fully be yourself.

We are proud to create homes for people from all walks of life, designing spaces that reflect the unique stories, lifestyles, and personalities of those who live in them. Because the best homes aren't built around trends—they're built around people.

June also marks the beginning of summer entertaining season. From backyard gatherings and outdoor dining to welcoming friends and family into your home, this is a season centered around connection and community.

And speaking of community, we're excited to begin teasing something special: Sterling Salutes America 250, a town-wide celebration in collaboration with Sterling & Maple Home and other local businesses. May Color Edit | Accent Walls

Are accent walls still relevant?

The answer is more nuanced than a simple yes or no.

The accent wall has had a complicated decade.
Done without intention, it can feel like a leftover trend.
Done well, it feels architectural, grounded, and completely connected to the room.

At Joshua Allen Design, we believe accent walls should respond to the space—not be added by default.

The most successful examples usually highlight something the room already wants you to notice:
• A fireplace wall
• Built-in cabinetry
• A headboard wall
• Meaningful architectural details

What makes an accent wall feel dated is often random placement or contrast that feels abrupt rather than integrated.

And sometimes?
A full-room color drench, subtle tonal variation, wallpaper, paneling, or material texture creates a much stronger result than a single painted wall ever could.

Because the question isn’t whether accent walls are “in” or “out.”
It’s whether they’re right for *your* space.

Live Outside | The Finishing Layer

The difference between an outdoor space you visit and one you actually live in? Atmosphere.

As the sun goes down, lighting and airflow become what define the experience.

A few layers we always consider:
• Path lighting that adds warmth, safety, and subtle architectural definition
• Task lighting near grilling and cooking zones for both function and ambiance
• Decorative lighting that softens the space and invites people to linger longer

And on covered porches, a thoughtfully placed ceiling fan does more than cool the air—it extends how long the space stays comfortable while helping keep bugs at bay during peak summer evenings.

These details may feel small, but they completely change how a space lives after dark.

Because great outdoor design isn’t only about how it looks during the day.
It’s about creating a space people never want to leave at night.
