VINTAGE PRINCE ALBERT SMOKING TO***CO TIN

Remember the popular ruse people used to play on to***co retailers in the 1940’s and 50’s.
The phone rings.
The Retailer picks up the phone.
The Caller says: “Do you have Prince Albert in a can?”
The Retailer says: “Why, yes we do?”
The Caller says: “Well, I think you better let him out.”
And the Caller giggles and hangs up.
And the Retailer, with a bemused look on his face, slams the phone on the hook and stamps his foot on the floor.

This is an empty vintage Prince Albert smoking to***co tin. It features a bold red design with a crimp cut & the label also reads “long-burning.”
It is 7 oz. capacity and includes the original lid and opener.

USED: Very good condition with minor wear from use.
For some reason, though, the image of Prince Albert has been rubbed off on one side of the tin.

FAIRY LAMPS

After being slaves to the grass mowing, the mulching of the flower beds and weeding most of the summer, we decided it was time for a fun excursion into the MAGICAL ATTIC. We hadn’t made a visit for quite some time, so we wondered just what new and exciting things might be waiting for us.

As usual, the cavern like chambers, huge rooms and various hallways still astonished us after multiple visits. Where were we going to be drawn to this time? We casually strolled down one hallway past several chambers and rooms. We came to another hallway where we seemed to be enticed in that direction.

In a short time we came upon a doorway emitting bright twinkling lights. It was a beautiful sight. A plethora of tiny lights flashing, twinkling and sparkling all around the room. It was simply gorgeous to behold – rich ambers, cool blues, fiery reds, soft pinks and many others. It took us a few minutes to process just exactly what we were viewing. And then suddenly – we knew. The room was filled with Fairy Lamps of various sizes and colors.

A fairy lamp you say. What is that? Well, in the Victorian era home lighting relied entirely oh open flames. This of course, posed extreme fire risks, especially in hallways, bedrooms and nurseries.

In 1840 a manufacturer introduced a new type of candle – shorter, fatter and encased in paper which burned safely for hours when placed in a saucer of water.
Then, along came Samuel Clarke, an English designer, who patented a 2-piece glass device tailored to hold the new stout candles. It had a base cup to secure the candle and a dome-shaped top. It became a big hit. As a marketing ploy, Clarke called them Fairy Lamps and even embossed a tiny trademark fairy onto the bottom of his early candle cups. Consumers loved them - viola…. The Fairy Lamp.

Meanwhile, back in the room with the twinkling, flashing, sparkling lights. We were immediately drawn to a few of these lamps. Naturally, we figured they would find a good home in our Shoppe – THE SHOPPE OF CURIOUS THINGS. For they are surely very curious things and you will find a selection of them on our shelves. Stop in and see which ones you are drawn to.

THE MAGICAL ATTIC

Over the years countless customers have asked us where we get our antiques, collectibles and curious artifacts that we sell in THE SHOPPE OF CURIOUS THINGS. In response, we know, we have hedged and hawed and hesitated in our answers. Well, we have finally decided to share our secret with you – it’s the MAGICAL ATTIC.

It’s a wonderful and fun place for exploring. It is made up of a multitude of cavernous chambers, too many to count, they just seem to appear out of nowhere and are packed with exiting and mysterious heirlooms. Each time we enter it we never know where we might be or what might pop-up out of its many nooks and crannies.

We at THE SHOPPE OF CURIOUS THNGS have been very fortunate to have stumbled upon this mystical place. We have discovered a variety of curious and whimsical artifacts over the years, some of which end up on the shelves of our Shoppe for your shopping pleasure.

Where is this MAGICAL ATTIC located, you may ask? Ah! That’s a good question. But unfortunately we can’t answer that question…because we ourselves don’t know the answer. It’s as whimsical as a sun beam reflecting off of a baby’s eye - It’s there and it’s not, depending on how and where you look. But we do look forward to the opportunity of continuing to explore its nooks and crannies for some or all of its treasures.

Thanks for shopping with us, Gene & Mary Ann
