Volansky Studio Architecture and Interiors

Architecture and design studio based out of Stowe, Vermont. Working in New England and beyond.

As an architect, practicing since 1997, initially in Vail Colorado and since 2003 in Stowe Vermont with the Cushman Design Group and to now (2015) under my own design firm, I have had the opportunity to work on residential projects of varying scale from 8,000 sf custom home to 1,600 sf compact home; from a small tree house for a local elementary school built by the students to high end ski-in/ski-out townhomes with multiple owners; from new construction of a commercial/retail building to interior commercial tenant/restaurant fit-up; from supporting real estate agents and their clients to find the right building site to full blown 20 year campus master planning. In each project what has been unique has been the client; their project needs, style & tastes, their desired budget and their building site. Each has to be studied to find what makes a project BELONG to each client and makes their project truly personal to them. It is not about a specific design style or an architect driven process, it is about listening and prioritizing the needs of each person, business or family. My approach is one of collaboration, the term Studio in the firm name refers to a process of collaborating with individuals and goes well beyond the walls of my studio. My belief that the client has much to bring to the table as well as the various craftspeople and general contractors who execute the designs is fundamental to the success of the project. Architecture is a complex process and involves many skilled and smart people.

A design study from the studio. This barn-form house pairs a standing-seam roof with a weathering steel entry volume, set against darker cladding below, in an exploration of how contrast can hold a simple form together.

Some of the most meaningful details at Farmhouse Magic come from the home’s history. The interior hemlock beams were cut and set as replicas of those in the family’s original barn, carrying a piece of that history into their new home.

Early fall site visit at Hilltop. With the workshop done, the house is down to studs and moving fast. Timber beams were just set at the entry, and the fall views are opening up through what will be the kitchen, dining, and living spaces.

A calm color palette lets each material stand out. The warm wood, soft neutral tile colors, natural stone, and brass each bring something different while still feeling cohesive.

Updated wooden features are breathing new life into this ski home, originally built in the 1970s.

We created a through-line design element that freshens up the concept of a mountain retreat. Everything from the geometric cut of the stair rails to the way natural light filters through the slats allows this home to feel warm and modern.

A pretty good reminder of why we love building in Vermont, and not a bad view from one of our projects either. Wishing everyone a happy fall and plenty of time to enjoy the foliage while it lasts.

Sometimes landscapes are particularly favorable. That was certainly the case when choosing a site for this new garage at Farmhouse Magic.

We were thankful to already have enough room to tuck this garage closer to the rear slope. We didn't want anything to distract from the proud homestead look of the farmhouse situated at the top of the clearing.

While this multi-use garage is impressive in its own right, its position keeps it out of the way when arriving at the home, leaving the farmhouse itself the first thing you see.
