Kind of a dull photo, but it’s a behind the scenes step in my process. My favorite way to heat up a dyed piece after ice melt — stick it in a plastic bag and place it in the sun outside. This creates a greenhouse effect and it gets hot quick, all for free thanks to the sun. Really helps with blues!

This color combo is FABULOUS. Using ice to get these interesting dye effects. Each piece is unique but the color combo is repeatable.

Curious about how to get dye from indigo plants? Here’s a quick video of the first part of the process. I’m using Japanese indigo here, which is easy to grow most places. It’s also very easy to root in water to make more plants. See the characteristic blue-green “mermaid water” after a 24 hr soaking of the leaves? That’s what you’re looking for before moving onto the next step. It fluoresces under UV blacklight!

This flowy rayon tunic is another favorite colorway. It’s available in a medium and small, although each has its own unique pattern. Rayon has lots of drape and feels cool against the skin, which makes it perfect for hot summer weather.

One of the most vibrant botanical dyes. Goldenrod is incredible!

Indigo is a fascinating dye. It’s yellow/amber colored when it changes form and can bond with fiber. This occurs in a reduced, alkaline environment with little oxygen. Once the textile is pulled out of the vat, it hits the air and turns BLUE!

There’s a lot of steps when tying up a geode style shirt and ice dyeing. It’s a multi-day process but the end result is always fabulous!
